The Zeta Hive was a very large and ancient Xenomorph Hive built around abandoned Engineer structures on LV-1201. It is notable for housing multiple Queens and LV-1201's Empress.
Overview[]
The exact size of the Hive is unknown, but it consisted of various very large caves covered in Xenomorph resin, gradually leading into the Engineer structure near the Zeta Site. Beams of resin spanned meters across cave walls and even blocked the circular engine/reactor of the Engineer complex. In some areas, water pooled at the bottom of crevices to form small ponds. The Hive consisted of Drones, Runners, and Praetorians. Predaliens were also present on LV-1201, but were very rare and never encountered in the Hive structure itself.
History[]
The Engineer structures on LV-1201 were tens of thousands of years old[1]. If the Hive was also as old remains to be seen, but the Zeta Hive already existed circa 1730[2], and was still there between 2221 and 2231. Weyland-Yutani scientists theorized it was at least several thousand years old. For many periods, it was dormant and inactive. Activity was preceded by pheromone discharges linked to changes in LV-1201's weather[3]. On January 6, 2231, Weyland-Yutani forces led by Arnaud Eisenberg abducted the Empress, causing upheaval in the Hive[4], but the actions of a lone Drone led to her rescue and return to the Hive. Eisenberg, actually a Synthetic, was cocooned in the Hive[5].
Trivia[]
- At least three Queens were seen in the LV-1201 Hive: one that was killed by Prince just before fighting General Rykov[6], one killed by Andrew Harrison and one that appeared at a tunnel mouth near the location of the first one killed by Harrison, just before he escaped back to the USS Verloc. It is possible that the last was actually the same as the second, and Harrison only temporarily incapacitated her rather than killing her outright[7].
- A second Hive was constructed in the overrun Primary Operations Complex in the fall of 2230[8].
