The USS Sheridan was a T26 terraforming vessel commissioned in 2150, based on an AlphaOmega freighter design from 2130. Multiple parts of the ship were based on reconditioned hardware; particular among those was the landing apparatus.[1]
History[]
The USS Sheridan was commissioned in 2150, with its recommended decommissioning slated for 2160. In 2157, the Sheridan was returning to Earth from its latest Colonial Intelligence Command terraforming assignment with Mission Commander Henry Hericksen, Captain Mac Williams, Science Officer Jack O'Connor, and Doctor Lora McGuiness in cryonic suspension for 200 days when the ship's control system, MOM, received an automated Class III SOS from a mining company on the planet B54c, which could potentially indicate an epidemic, environmental failure, or any other disaster. CIC protocol dictated that the "mud farmers" respond, whether they wanted to or not; MOM automatically defrosted them in responses to the SOS.[1]
Overview[]
The USS Sheridan was based on an AlphaOmega freighter design from 2130. The ship used multiple reconditioned hardware, especially its landing apparatus.[1]
Weapons system[]
As a terraforming vessel, the USS Sheridan was not equipped for primary combat. Individual weaponry was part of the basic equipment stored for the crew's use for individual protection, especially during extravehicular activity in unknown sectors.[1]
Amenities[]
Long transit times meant that terraformers required leisure activities to allow relaxation and to optimize mission performance. The USS Sheridan had standard issue hardware for sustaining mind and body.[1]
Plasmatech[]
- Main article: Plasmatech
The Level 4 Plasmatech installed aboard the Sheridan allowed periodic rotation of desired foodstuffs, based on crew selection. After accumulation of interstellar organic materials during transit, biotransformation technology was utilized for food synthesis.[1]
Reversi[]
- Main article: Reversi
Reversi could be played on the Sheridan, having become a staple game of the 22nd century. Culturally related to such games of Earth's past as chess and Go, reversi satisfied the crew's need for cognitive focus and competition in a low-stakes environment.[1]
MOM[]
- Main article: MOM
MOM was the ship's Master Onboard Memory -- Primary Fact File. MOM was a 13th Generation - Artificial intelligence system, its primary function was total automation of all shipboard systems and carried a cost of $10M. The hardware configurations of other Sheridan mechanicals were grossly inferior to MOM.[1]
