The Type 88 Heavy Assault Rifle was an assault rifle manufactured by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and used by the Three World Empire and the United States Colonial Marine Corps.
Development[]
The Type 88 was developed by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation with the intent of countering the dominance of the Kramer Assault Rifle in the private contracting market; however, it was delayed by numerous redesigns, "scope creep", and cost overruns that made it somewhat expensive.[1]
Overview[]
The Type 88 Assault Rifle fired high-caliber ammunition and was effective at close and long range. Despite its high recoil, the rifle possessed considerable stopping power. Critically, however, the rifle was too expensive for most private military contractors to afford. Furthermore, developing the rifle resulted in a billion-dollar loss for Weyland-Yutani, initially due to development costs, and subsequently because of "Golden Parachutes" clauses in the contracts of the Personal Weapons Division's entire management, which forced them to resign in disgrace. Another factor in the rifle's failure was its marketing—Weyland-Yutani paid to have the rifle featured in spy thriller films.[1]

Originally released in 2188 for private military contractors, the weapon also received a limited deployment among the Three World Empire's Royal Marines Commandos and the United States Colonial Marine Corps.[1]

The Type 88 Heavy Assault Rifle appears in Aliens: Fireteam Elite as part of a Season 1 update and can be acquired from Staff Sergeant Han-jae Park for 9600 Requisition Points. It can be equipped by Gunner, Demolisher, Recon and Doc classes.[1] The rifle was referred to as the "Type 78 Heavy Assault Rifle" before the game's release, sharing the same designation as the Type 78 Burst Pistol.[2]
