- "Aimed at filling the gap that Hand Cannons have now largely taken over, the Type 78 can't hit as hard or as far as an actual Hand Cannon, but the accuracy and fire rate it provides makes it considerably more effective at range than any other Machine Pistol."
- ―Description of the Type 78 Burst Pistol (from Aliens: Fireteam Elite)
The Type 78 Burst Pistol, also labeled the Type 78, was a model of machine pistol manufactured by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and used by the Three World Empire and the United States Colonial Marine Corps during the 22nd century.
Development[]
The Type 78 Burst Pistol was developed by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation with a view to filling the gap between handcannons and machine pistols. Weyland–Yutani built the Type 78 with their trademarked Bevelpup™ design and, as with all of their third–generation weapons, it featured a three–round burst fire mode with tight impact grouping.[1]
Overview[]
While the Type 78 did not possess the range or power of a regular handcannon, the pistol's accuracy and fire rate made it more effective than any other machine pistol at longer range, and its compact Bevelpup™ design made it exceptionally handy. However, its design also limited its ammunition capacity to average, and its three–burst only fire mode was also criticized.[1]
Notable users[]
Originally released in 2178 for the Three World Empire's military police forces, the Type 78 was also used by the 3WE's Royal Marines Commandos and national services. It also found limited success with the the United States Colonial Marine Corps, United Americas Orbit Guard, and private military contractors. Users in the USCM who were able to make effective use of the Type 78 chose it as their weapon of choice, while others considered it overly expensive and counterintuitive.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The Type 78 Burst Pistol appears in Aliens: Fireteam Elite and can be acquired via a random drop by finishing a mission in Intense difficulty. It can be equipped by Technician, Doc, and Phalanx classes.[1]
