Sergeant Tom Hallet was a member of Sergeant Lopé's security team aboard the Weyland-Yutani Corporation colony ship USCSS Covenant and Lopé's husband. During the Covenant's disastrous voyage to Origae-6, Hallet was part of an expeditionary team sent to survey a mysterious planet that was detected following a cosmic event that struck the ship. While exploring, Hallet and guard Ben Ledward were infected by spores that resulted in dangerous creatures violently emerging from their bodies and attacking their colleagues.

Biography[]

Trouble on the Covenant[]

Prior to 2103, Sergeant Tom Hallet worked alongside Sergeant Dan Lopé as part of a military force. They fell in love and eventually married, although their dedication to the job came before their personal life. Hallet sometimes disagreed with what Lopé commanded of him, but he would ultimately follow orders given him. Weyland-Yutani Corporation later invited Lopé and Hallet's security team to secure and escort 2,000 colonists and crew members for a colonization mission to Origae-6 aboard the colony ship USCSS Covenant.[3]

Shortly before the ship was due to launch from Earth orbit, Hallet was the acting leader of its security complement while Lopé was in London interviewing applicants for the final guard position. In the final days of preparation, a saboteur planted explosives in[3] one of the vessel's terraforming bays[4] and took a hostage, demanding that the departure of the Covenant be halted. Upon grasping the situation, Hallet deployed guards Ankor, Cole, and Ben Ledward to the scene and immediately informed captain Jacob Branson and chief teraformist Katherine Daniels. After escorting Daniels to the bay, Hallet deferred to her knowledge of and responsibility to the equipment therein, letting her take the lead in dealing with the terrorist. The attack was foiled when Daniels had pilot Tennessee Faris use white noise to scramble the terrorist's remote detonator. Some time after the incident, Hallet conversed with Lopé in London via comm unit, keeping him up to date on security checks.[3]

Later,[5] Hallet underwent fear conditioning alongside several other members of the Covenant crew at a Weyland-Yutani facility on the moon of Phobos. During his session, Hallet confessed that something burrowing into his skin would unnerve him.[6]

One last party[]

Following the successful launch of the Covenant, and before Hallet and the other crew members entered hypersleep, they partook in one last meal. During the celebrations, Tennessee bet money on Hallet beating Lopé in an arm-wrestling competition, with Hallet losing to Lopé. Lopé kissed him and reaffirmed his love for Hallet, prompting Tennessee to jump in with a comment on Hallet's sex life. The festivities finished with a speech from Daniels dedicated to the Covenant and everybody aboard.[7]

Disaster and discovery[]

In 2104, one year into the journey, a neutrino blast hit the Covenant while it was recharging via solar sail. The blast damaged the ship, killing dozens of colonists and forcing the crew out of hypersleep. Hallet awoke alongside much of the rest of the crew; however, Branson was trapped within his sleep pod and was incinerated alive when it malfunctioned. As the chaos subsided, Hallet and Lopé ran security checks; Hallet was late for a meeting on the bridge, apologising to newly-promoted captain Chris Oram for his tardiness. While repairing the ship, Tennessee intercepted a recording which was traced to a nearby Earth-like planet that would take several weeks rather than seven years to reach. On Oram's orders, the Covenant was rerouted to the new destination. Hallet was assigned to the investigative detachment led by Oram, along with the remainder of the security team.[2]

While traveling to the surface aboard Lander One, Hallet expressed discomfort during the frenetic drop, and was reassured by Lopé. Before long, the detachment encountered a crashed alien ship; while inside, Hallet found a strange puffball-like plant.[2] Hoping to be credited for its discovery,[1] Hallet probed the fungus and inadvertently inhaled the spores it released. The microscopic lifeforms contained therein infiltrated his nostril and caused him momentary discomfort, but otherwise went unacknowledged by the sergeant.[2]

Hallet duly fell ill, and an urgent call from Lander One prompted the team to withdraw from the wreck. Before the expedition members could reach the lander, it exploded; Ledward had been infected by similar spores, and crewmembers Karine Oram and Maggie Faris had died in an attempt to contain a monstrous alien that emerged from him, with Faris' mishandling of a shotgun causing the blast. Shortly after the lander's detonation, Hallet was overcome by convulsions and collapsed to the ground as the creature inside him violently emerged through his throat, killing him. Both creatures attacked the crew, killing Ankor and damaging ship's synthetic Walter, but were frightened off by the arrival of a mysterious interloper who exhorted the survivors to follow him. Lopé briefly mourned Hallet's loss, but was spurred into action by colleague Sarah Rosenthal, and took Hallet's ring with him.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"My character, Hallett [sic] is married to Lope [sic]. They've been married for quite a few years and they love each other. It's a very real thing."
―Nathaniel Dean describing Hallet's relationship with Lope[src]

Tom Hallet first appeared in The Last Supper, a short released on YouTube to promote the 2017 film Alien: Covenant.[7] In the short—and the film itself—Hallet was portrayed by Nathaniel Dean.[2]
