GJ1187.03, also dubbed Shānmén, was a resource–rich jungle planet located in the GJ1187 System of the Frontier's Weyland Isles Sector. The location of a major Union of Progressive Peoples mining operation, in 2186 Shānmén was attacked by an alien vessel, which unleashed a dangerous pathogen on the planet and its biosphere.
History[]
Prior to 2186,[1] GJ1187.03 was the site of an edifice built by the enigmatic alien race known as the Engineers. As of 2186, the planet—now dubbed Shānmén—had been colonized by the Union of Progressive Peoples and was the site of the Svarog Mine, a facility established by the Jùtóu Combine to mine the valuable substance Eitr;[2] Svarog represented one of the largest such operations in known space.[4] Meanwhile, the UPP ran weapons development programs including that of the Ilyasov EVI-86X Zvezda Plasma Rifle at Romashka Outpost and Seneca, an orbital research station under the aegis of the Hyperdyne Corporation.[3]
In 2186, Shānmén was the site of one of the infamous Border Bombings, during which alien vessels carpeted target worlds with a dangerous pathogen. The planet's wildlife was mutated by the substance, and much of the human population was wiped out. Following the evacuation of several survivors by the elite Xenomorph–hunting unit dubbed the Jackals, Shānmén was declared a dead world by UPP General Kasey Ristic.[2] All parties involved in the evacuation thereafter attended sessions organized by the United Nations Interstellar Settlement Corps to discuss the possibility of a nuclear strike on Shānmén; in the meantime, the world was quarantined.[1]
Flora and fauna[]
Shānmén was the habitat for several indigenous creatures; ground–dwelling animals included the Begemot,[3] the earth truck, the kopat,[2] and the Lev Polosku,[3] while the planet's avian fauna included the giant hawk, the noddle-head, the scuffle-face, and the shovel-head.[2] These animals were mutated by a mysterious pathogen after it was unleashed on Shānmén, creating Xenomorphic abominations including the Thrasher, the Alion, and the Raptor.[3]
Climate and terrain[]

Somewhat resembling Earth from orbit, Shānmén featured a tropical and sometimes temperate climate and a breathable atmosphere,[2] with the occasional violent storm occurring.[3] The planet's surface was covered in jungle, rainforests, and clumps of fungus, and included rocky mountains.[1]
Economy[]
Industry on Shānmén revolved around weapons development,[3] macrofauna research,[1] and mining. Key resources included Eitr.[2]
Population[]
Prior to the attack on Shānmén, the world's population was estimated to stand at twenty thousand, though there was a possibility that the actual count exceeded that number.[1]
Points of interest[]
Several UPP colonies were established on Shānmén, including Neues Aurich, New Luhansk, Novaya Tver, and the planet's largest conurbation, Sueños Grandes. More business–oriented facilities included the Svarog Mine, the Hyperdyne Corporation's orbital Seneca platform,[2] and Romashka Outpost, a weapon testing facility disguised as a biodiversity research center.[3] Engineer ruins were located beneath the planet's surface under the Svarog Mine.[2]
