Sean H. Keyes[2][3][4] was a member of Project Stargazer. He was the son of Peter Keyes.
Biography[]
Sean Keyes was a member of Stargazer, an organization that replaced OWLF. Unlike other members of his team at Stargazer, Sean was fairly benign as he showed Casey their operation and during the break out by Fugitive, he let her know where the escaped predator went.
Prior to his work at Stargazer, Sean was affiliated with OWLF and documented the team's progress in his audio logs. He was aware of the team's progress even up to the trap that set up at the slaughter house. He reports that Harrigan gave an account of his battle with City Hunter. Sean and his team discovered the City Hunter's arm though he laments that he didn't think it was worth the price the team paid.
At some point, Sean and his team had met with Dutch in alley, Dutch apparently told him his account and that he was good friends with his father and that he was "unofficially" let go. They had been keeping tabs on each other and even sharing information about the Predators, leading Dutch to come to Los Angeles to help OWLF track the City Hunter down but due to limited resources, he was not able to arrive in time.
Sean had since worked with Dutch, considering him helpful to their efforts. From there on in, Dutch would act as their field agent and collect or leave samples for OWLF to recover. Sean allowed Dutch to keep City Hunter's spear as a down payment, though he jokes in his logs that he doubt he would have been able to stop him if he tried. His team received a Predator helmet from Dutch that was fully functional.
Sean kept in contact with Adam Garber, his father's friend and co-worker. He arranged with Garber to keep Dutch and his team off the record as much as possible so that they can work more effectively and do much more than they could in an official capacity. Sean and his team's studying of City Hunter's arm led them to speculate that City Hunter was actually a juvenile of its species. He further speculates that with Harrigan's account, that the hunt was meant to be an initiation into adulthood. OWLF's carbon dating of the bone structure seemed to indicate that City Hunter, despite apparently being juvenile, was actually around three hundred years old. Sean believes they could live upto a thousand years old and he further speculates that their technology could have been scavenged from other species.
In 1999, Sean received a plasma caster from Dutch after the latter and his team killed a Predator. He notes either the "Elders" who came for the body, either didn't notice or care that Dutch stole the weapon.
in 2001, Sean decided to accompany Dutch on a mission in order to better gain understanding and first hand knowledge. He intentionally avoided taking a weapon as he was aware the species' preference for targeting armed prey.
He would later report about Dutch's near death encounter against what he speculated to be a female Predator as well as the team's death. Sean and his team would heal Dutch and discover that the serum they used had unique side effects.
Sean would report that Predator detection has lessened and that funding for the OWLF is becoming a problem, in a later report, Sean confirms in what would be his last audio log that OWLF is being abolished and replaced with Stargazer. Sean notes that someone from CIA was responsible for betraying them.
Personality[]
Unlike his father, Sean Keyes was more affable and approachable and got into friendly debates with the staff at Stargazer, though it is unknown what position of authority he had in the organization. After the Fugitive Predator escapes, he tells Casey where to go to find it, unlike his colleague Traeger who almost immediately ordered her termination.
When first starting his audio logs for posterity, Sean had a somewhat nervous dispostion which gradually become excitement at the prospect of discovering that Los Angeles was being used as a hunting ground. Despite the differences in personality between Sean and his father, they seemed to have been close as Sean's logs after the Los Angeles incident clearly have a somber tone and later notes how difficult his passing was. Sean does say that having Dutch around does help give him a sense of closure.
Trivia[]
- Originally, Keyes' first name was given as Sean in the novel The Predator: Hunters and Hunted. However, in the novelization of The Predator, his name is instead spelt Shawn. The later novel Predator: Stalking Shadows once again gives his first name as Sean. Being the more frequent spelling, it is assumed Sean is correct, whereas the novelisation of The Predator is wrong.
- While Keyes apparently survives the events of The Predator, his fate in the movie's novelization is quite different — he is killed by the Fugitive during the breakout, and the Predator beheads him before also cutting off his hand, taking both so that it can bypass the retina and palmprint scanners sealing the lab exit.[5] After opening the door, the Fugitive discards the dismembered body parts and Keyes' head is repeatedly crushed by the elevator-style sliding doors as they attempt to close.[6]
- Sean refers to the Predator of the second film by it's common title of "City Hunter" in his audio logs, this name was first used in Predator: Concrete Jungle (video game).
