"A demon from legend that once hunted skilled warriors who protected feudal Japan."
―Description of the Samurai Predator (from Predator: Hunting Grounds)

The Samurai Predator was a Yautja who conducted hunts during Feudal Japan.[1]

Biography[]

Not much is known about the Samurai Predator except that he conducted hunts during the Feudal Japan era (most likely during the Azuchi–Momoyama period) His favourite prey were the medieval Japanese warriors named Samurai. To honor his prey, this Yautja ornated his armor and mask to resemble them and adopted the same weapon as them[1]

Equipment[]

The Samurai Predator possessed typical Yautja weaponry, in addition to a more exotic weapon - the Katana. He designed his armor to look like Samurai warriors. The bio-mask in-fact, bore resemblance to a Japanese demon - an 'Oni', as well as an unmasked Yautja.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Samurai Predator was released alongside its Katana in the Samurai Predator DLC pack.
  • The Samurai Predator keeps his dreadlocks tied back in a high topknot called Chonmage (a Japanese hairstyle). Top-Knot had a similar hairstyle.
  • It is said that the Predator hunted during the Feudal Japan (which lasted from 1185 to 1600) but it can be reduced to the Azuchi–Momoyama period (which lasted from 1568 to 1600) for two reasons:
    • The Predator armor bears the style of a 16th Century samurai armor.
    • The Chonmage, which he copied with his dreadlocks, was adopted as sign of manliness in the 1580s in the military castes.

  • He is not the first Predator to have fought Samurais. The Predator called the "Oni" or the "Aokigahara Ghost", featured in the short story Three Sparks from the novel Predator: If It Bleeds, fought them nearly four to five centuries ago.

  • The Samurai Predator is one of many Yautja to feature a Japanese-inspired design:
    • The fan-movie Batman: Dead End featured a Predator known as Big Red, who bore red armor and wielded two Japanese swords.
    • Hot Toys released the 'Samurai Predator' figure in 2011. Similar to the Samurai Predator from Hunting Grounds, this Yautja bore armor and weaponry made to resemble that of historical Japan.
    • Square Enix released the 'Oni Predator' figure in 2015. This Predator featured an aesthetic akin to that of a Japanese demon.
  • Perhaps as a sort of irony, the Yautjas visage do physically resemble the mythological Oni. The Samurai Predator, either became aware of this, or is merely unconsciously using a helmet which resembles his true face.
