The Soviet advisor's true purpose in Val Verde remains unclear, although it seems likely he was there to provide the guerrillas with military hardware, including surface-to-air heat-seeking missiles, and train them in the equipment's use.
Hostage execution and ambush
The advisor was first spotted by Dutch's team as they observed the guerrillas' jungle encampment from afar; he was seen executing one of the hostages they had come to rescue. He was ultimately killed during the team's assault on the camp by Dutch himself, who blew the advisor through the wall of a straw hutch with the M203 grenade launcher attached to his rifle.
The advisor was armed with a Walther PP pistol.
Behind the scenes
The actor who played the Russian advisor, Sven-Ole Thorsen, is an old bodybuilding partner and good friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played Dutch. To date, Thorsen has appeared on-screen (usually in minor non-speaking roles) in no less than twelve Schwarzenegger movies, including Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Red Sonja, Raw Deal, Predator, The Running Man, Red Heat, Twins, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Last Action Hero, Eraser, End of Days and Collateral Damage. He has also worked behind the scenes as a trainer on several more Schwarzenegger films.
- The Walther PP used by the advisor is likely intended to stand in for the Makarov PM pistol, which looks somewhat similar and was standard Soviet issue at the time.
