"You should be helping us. I think this creature is a hunter, looking for the strongest beast. What do you know?"
Raphael to Naru (from Prey)

Raphael Adolini was a French voyageur and member of Big Beard's fur trapping party, active across the Great Plains in 1719. Upon him and his men encountering the Feral Predator, he sought assistance from the captured Comanche woman, Naru in defeating the creature, but would eventually use her as bait to lure it into a trap.

He was ultimately killed by the creature after gifting Naru his flintlock pistol in exchange for treating his amputated foot.

Biography[]

Acquiring his Pistol[]

In the year 1715, a flintlock pistol was inscribed with Raphael's name and the current year which ended up in Raphael's possession.

Dealing with Naru[]

Raphael was a member of Big Beard's band of voyageurs that had recently come under conflict after an unknown creature - a Yautja, had attacked them. Upon taking Comanche woman, Naru, hostage, Big Beard had Raphael attempt to reason with her in finding out what she knew about their attacker. After she was uncooperative, the voyageurs tortured her brother, Taabe, in front of her.

The voyageurs ultimately used Naru and Taabe as bait to lure the Predator out. Though the trap initially seemed successful, the Predator broke free and slaughtered them. During the skirmish, Raphael fired a shot from his flintlock pistol at the creature, before attempting to flee. In retaliation, the Feral Predator tossed a Cut Clamp at him, bisecting his foot. As it dealt with the rest of the voyageurs, Raphael eventually made his way back to the trapper's camp. Encountering Naru, he attempted to threaten her at gunpoint with his flintlock, though, after Naru expressed interest in the gun, Raphael struck a bargain with her - he would teach her how to load and use the weapon in exchange for medical treatment. Naru treated Raphael's foot and provided him with Orange totsiyaa to ease the pain and cool his blood.

Death[]

Naru suddenly departed, Raphael protesting. After realizing that the Predator was nearby, he immediately played possum. The creature examined Raphael's motionless body, its thermal-vision unable to pick up Adolini's heat signature due to the Orange flower he ingested.

After preparing to depart, the Predator callously stepped on Adolini's severed foot, causing him to yell out in pain - the Predator responded by drawing his Wristblades and plunging them into the Frenchman, killing him.

Personality and Traits[]

"What did you see? I speak a lot of languages. You are Comanche, yes?"
Raphael to Naru (from Prey)

Raphael was a meek and timid character, and he was pushed around by his peers likely because of this. Raphael was a man seemingly concerned with his own survival more so than anything else, using his multilinguism to get by, whilst avoiding direct conflict whenever possible.

Despite his cowardly nature, he was at least honorable enough to hold his end of his bargain with Naru, and taught her how to use his pistol.

Behind the Scenes[]

Raphael's actor, Bennett Taylor, had read the Dark Horse short comic Predator: 1718 to prepare for his role as Raphael, and attempted "to bring as much of that character into prey that made sense". He also expressed interest in reprising his role.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Raphael Adolini of the film bears little resemblance to the original from the Dark Horse comic. While the original was a bold and honorable pirate captain who even showed piety, the movie Raphael was a timid, browbeaten tracker working for voyageurs. Even their origins are changed, as comics Raphael is Italian and film Raphael is French. Additionally, in their respective first encounters with a Predator, comics Raphael responded by attacking it with his sword while movie Raphael played dead, showcasing the marked difference in bravery of the two versions. Consequently, Greyback in the comics treated Raphael with honor after his death, making a grave for him and even leaving the church sacraments and his own sword with Raphael's body. In the movie, a wounded Raphael is unceremoniously killed by the Feral Predator.
