"This is the cryo log for the mining hauler Corbelan. I set course to the Yvaga system without knowing if I'll ever reach it or what fate waits to find me, but whatever comes, I'll face it. This is Rain Carradine, last survivor of the Corbelan. Signing off."
―Rain from (Alien: Romulus)

Marie Raines "Rain" Carradine[3] was a human colonist and 'sister' to the synthetic Andy. Initially specializing in farming, Carradine was ordered to serve in the mines at the Jackson's Star colony, and was involved in an incident on the Renaissance space station after seizing a potential chance to escape that life.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Rain grew up on Jackson's Star located in LV-410,[4] which hosted a society that disliked synthetics.[5] An N-D-255 synthetic model was retrieved "from the dumpster" by Rain's father. Andy had a habit of making pun-based jokes, and at least initially, Rain found them humorous.[6]

Rain's life on Jackson Star wasn't an easy one. When she was in her late teens,[6] her parents were dying from lung disease due to the mines conditions. Her father left Andy to be a kind of caretaker[7]. However, Andy was damaged and was an older model, so rather than becoming Rain's surrogate father, he became a 'younger brother' to her.[8] Due to his damaged state, Andy was more a burden than a help. However, despite this,[6] and not being related by blood, she loved him as a brother, despite the prejudices of their society.[9]

Renaissance Station[]

In 2142, Carradine fulfilled her work contract with the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and expected to be allowed to leave for the planet Yvaga with Andy. However, because of a worker shortage, the clerk refused Carradine's request and instead extended her work contract from the 12,000 hours she already delivered to 24,000, telling her to later report to the mines. During her inquiry, Andy was attacked by delinquent kids but Carradine quickly intervened and fixed him. Moments later, she is summoned by her ex-boyfriend, Tyler Harrison who told her to bring Andy for their secret mission. At his residence, she met Tyler's younger sister Kay, his cousin Bjorn and Bjorn’s adoptive sister Navarro. Harrison informed Carradine of a derelict space station drifting in orbit above the colony, telling her they could use the station's still-functioning hypersleep chambers to facilitate an escape to Yvaga. She was initially reluctant to take part in a criminal trespass of Weyland-Yutani property and putting Andy in danger, but eventually goes along, specially as he was needed to communicate with the station's computers.

The group left in the mining hauler Corbelan IV to the derelict craft in which it was the first time either she or Andy had left their world's atmosphere.[4] They found out that derelict is actually a research outpost named Renaissance, divided into the sections Romulus and Remus. Carradine, Navarro and Harrison's younger sister stayed behind as the boys tried to find the pods. During their search, Carradine learns that Kay is secretly pregnant and begs her not to tell her brother, and Bjorn harbors grudges against synthetics as his mother and two others were killed by one in trying to save more than a dozen miners. After they had found the pods and fuel needed for the nine-year trip, Harrison, Bjorn and Andy are locked in a still-functioning cryonic chamber with her brother didn't have the security clearance needed to override the lockdown, prompting Navarro and Carradine to come to their rescue.

Carradine notices a destroyed synthetic and removes a chip from its brain, and through a gap in the door delivered it to Harrison so he can install the module into Andy. The chip granted him full access to Renaissance while repairing his malfunctions, but it also reseted his mission to serve Weyland-Yutani. Soon, the crew is pursued by a horde of Facehuggers with one attached itself to Navarro. Following unsuccessful attempts to release her from its grip, Carradine reactivates the destroyed synthetic, Rook, to ask for help. Rook stated that Navarro cannot be saved. However, Carradine proposed that they freeze the Facehugger’s tail to get it off Navarro. The idea worked, allowing the group to untie it from Navarro's neck and removed the creature from her face. Rook still warned that Navarro may have been implanted by the creature.

Andy tries to stop Navarro from returning to the Corbelan IV, but Bjorn, hostile towards Andy flees with Navarro aboard the vessel, leaving Rain, Andy and Tyler behind. However, Navarro is soon killed and left the unstable Corbelan IV to crash into the Romulus hangar bay in which they witnessed through the station's camera feed. The impact destabilizes Renaissance, which now had less than an hour before crashing into the rings of Jackson's Star. On their way to hanger, they were almost subdued by a horde of Facehuggers. Upon arriving, they encountered Kay who begged to be let in, was refused by Andy who noticed a Xenomorph stalking her. Despite Carradine's protests and pleas, inadvertently letting Harrison know that his sister was pregnant. The Xenomorph grabbed Kay and pulled her out of their sight. Thinking Kay was killed, Carradine slapped Andy out of anger but quickly felt remorseful.

Now focused on his new directives, Andy brings Carradine and Harrison into the lab where he recovered samples of experimental fluid extracted from the Xenomorphs, codenamed "Z-01" and referred to as the Prometheus strain by Rook. The former insisted the samples must be returned to Jackson's Star, takes control of Renaissance's computers and refuses to let the Corbelan IV leave without the samples onboard. Before leaving, Carradine noticed that Xenomorph was hunting for them, so Andy had them armed with F44AA Pulse Rifles to fight their way back to the ship. Entering a corridor turned into a Xenomorph hive, Harrison heard Kay crying, leading to the trio finding her severely injured in a cocoon. After she is freed, Andy noticed Kay's injuries and suggested that injecting her with Z-01 could possibly heal her. However, Carradine stopped Harrison from following through the idea and proposed to get her into cryostasis and back to Jackson's Star for treatment. The Xenomorphs attack, damaging Andy and killing Harrison who sacrificed himself to save her. After rushing Kay to an elevator, Carradine decided to rescue Andy, telling Kay to get to the Corbelan IV and prepare to leave.

Upon finding Andy, Carradine removed the extra chip from his brain and resets him back to his original directive. The Xenomorphs approach, and before they attack Carradine shut off the gravity generator, making them float and easier to shoot. As they rise in the elevator shaft, killing two more Xenomorphs along the way, they make it to the Corbelan IV, just as the Romulus starts to come down onto the asteroid belt. Rook made one final attempt to get Andy to follow the Wey-Yu objective, but they ignore him as Renaissance crashed into the rings and is destroyed, Rook and the Xenomorphs along with it.

As she and Andy prepare the Corbelan IV's departure, Carradine put Kay to a cryo pod but soon after, a warning indicates that Kay is in critical condition. Carradine opened the chamber and saw Kay giving birth to an egg, from which emerges a rapidly growing human-Xenomorph hybrid. Carradine tried to dispose of the egg but its acid caused it to slip through the grates and onto the cargo hold. Carradine went to try and armed herself to get help. However, the mutant killed Kay, heavily damaged Andy, and destabilized the Corbelan IV, threatening the ship with destruction. She put on a spacesuit as the temperature in the ship started to drop drastically and fought the mutant before ejecting it along with the ship's cargo pod which collided with LV-410's astroid belt. After Carradine regained control, she put Andy in one of the cryopods and promised to fix him. Before entering stasis herself, Carradine recorded a final log, reflecting on the uncertainty of their arrival at Yvaga but maintained hope.

Behind the Scenes[]

Rain and her sibling relationship with Andy was inspired by Aliens.[10]

In Alien: Romulus, the first shot of Rain focuses on her eyes. This was intentional cinematography, designed to quickly convey to the viewer that she's barely keeping things together, and has had experienced a lot of pain in her life.[6]
