Dan Milligan art for Vincenzo Natali pitch

A painting by artist Dan Milligan for the pitch.[1]

Predators was a film pitched to 20th Century Fox by director and screenwriter Vincenzo Natali[1] (the director of the films Cube, Cypher, Nothing and Splice) circa 2010 (approximately 5 years before summer 2015).[2] At the time, there was no script for the film,[1][3] only the log line "Predators hunt humans on their planet", "And that was about it".[3] With just the log line, Natali found the project enjoyable "because it was wide open."[3] and his pitch more visual than narrative.[1] It included storyboards by Natali[2] and artwork by artists Dan Milligan[1] and Amro Attia.[3]

Ultimately, Natali's pitch was not used and 20th Century Fox instead continued production of the film with a script originally written by film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor, cartoonist and musician Robert Rodriguez in 1996. Predators, directed by Nimród Antal and with Rodriguez producing, ultimately premiered on July 7, 2010 in the United States. Ironically, the film starred actor Adrien Brody as Royce, who had previously starred in Natali's 2009 film Splice.

On May 31, 2015, with artwork from Natali's old projects "gathering dust in [his] hard drive",[3] he shared the painting by Milligan (at 11:53 a.m.),[1] select storyboards (at 11:57 a.m.)[2] and the piece of Predator art by Attia (at 2:43 p.m.)[3] via his Twitter account, Vincenzo Natali (‏@Vincenzo_Natali), as part of his "PITCH IMPERFECT" series (a play on the title of the film Pitch Perfect, whose sequel, Pitch Perfect 2, had recently been released); Predators was "PITCH IMPERFECT 1".[1]
