Mortal Kombat X is a 2015 fighting video game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is the tenth main installment in the Mortal Kombat video game series and was released on April 14, 2015 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In July 2015, the Predator was made available as a playable character in the game, along with several other character skins inspired by the 1987 film Predator — including a special guest appearance from Predator actor Carl Weathers, who played Dillon — as part of a pair of DLC packs. In March 2016, a unique Xenomorph was also added as a playable character.

Predator DLC

Two pieces of Predator-themed DLC were released for the game, titled Predator and the Predator/Prey Pack. Both packs were available individually, or as part of the Kombat Pack bundle. They were made available for download on July 7, 2015 for users who owned the Kombat Pack season pass, or July 14 for everyone else.

Mortal Combat Predator

The Hunter Predator variation in Mortal Kombat X.

The Predator DLC introduced the Predator as a playable character, with a total of three different variations — the Warrior Predator (specializing in brute force), the Hunter Predator (utilizing traps and a self-heal Medicomp) and the Hish-Qu-Ten Predator (utilizing the famous Plasmacaster for ranged combat).

Beyond the playable character itself, many other references to the movie Predator are added to the game by the Predator DLC:

  • The Predator's moveset includes multiple references to the movie, with many of his kombo, fatality and brutality moves, as well as his X-ray, being named after quotes from Predator. Examples include "We. Hit. Nothing." (Poncho), "Ghostin' Us" (Mac), "Anytime" (the Jungle Hunter), "Time to Bleed" (Blain) and "If It Bleeds" (Dutch).
  • Upon winning a round as the Predator, the character will mimic their opponent's laugh, a nod to the Jungle Hunter when defeated by Dutch in Predator.
  • The Predator's victory animation after a match involves the Predator tearing out his opponent's spinal column, roaring in triumph and placing their skull in a Trophy Room.
  • When performing a brutality on the opponent, the Predator's victory animation shows the Predator cloaking itself, flashing its eyes (as seen in numerous movies and video games featuring the Predator) and walking off into the distance. Shortly afterwards, the cloaked silhouette of the Predator's ship is usually seen taking off in the background.
  • The Predator DLC also adds a special variation of Erron Black's x-ray move "Trick Shot", which typically shows a slow-motion bullet engraved with his victim's name hitting his opponent in the hip — when used against a Predator character, the bullet is engraved with the words "Ugly MoFo".
  • Additionally, during the intro sequence before a match between the Predator and Bo' Rai Cho, Cho will utter the words, "You are one ugly motherfucker."

Predator/Prey Pack

The Predator/Prey Pack, a companion piece to the Predator DLC, adds three new skins for existing characters in the game. The first of these, the "Commando" skin for Johnny Cage, is based on Arnold Schwarzenegger's outfit in Predator (while the name is also a reference to Schwarzenegger's hit movie Commando). The "Infrared" skin for Scorpion is based on the Predator's thermal vision. Lastly, the "Carl Weathers" skin for Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs, is based on Carl Weathers' appearance in Predator, and also replaces the character's usual dialogue with new audio recorded specially by Weathers. Like the Predator DLC, the Predator/Prey Pack was made available on July 14, 2015, both individually and as part of the Kombat Pack season pass.

An additional Predator reference is activated by selecting the "Carl Weathers" skin for Jax and playing against Johnny Cage in the "Commando" skin. Doing so will unlock a special loading screen, in which Jax and Cage recreate the famous "handshake" scene between Weathers and Schwarzenegger from the beginning of Predator, with Cage muttering, "You son of a bitch."

Alien DLC

A single piece of Alien DLC was released for the game, titled simply Alien. Similarly to the Predator-themed DLC packs before it, the Alien DLC could be purchased individually, or as part of the Kombat Pack 2 bundle. The DLC was made available for download on March 1, 2016.

Alien MKX

The Acidic variation for the Xenomorph in Mortal Kombat X.

The Alien DLC introduced an all new Tarkatan Xenomorph as a playable character, with a total of three different variations — the Tarkatan variation (utilizing its newfound arm-blades), the Acidic variation (prioritizing on the Alien's corrosive blood) and the Konjurer variation (summoning fellow Xenomorphs and Eggs to assist in battle).

As with the Predator, many other references to the movies Alien and Aliens are added to the game by the Alien DLC:

  • The Alien's moveset includes multiple references to the films, with many of its kombo moves being named after dialogue or plot points from the first movie, including "Here Kitty, Kitty" (Brett), "Lucky Star" (Ripley), "Kane's Son" (Ash), "Zeta II", "Warning Beacon" and many more.
  • The Alien's victory animation after a match involves it taking its opponent to a Hive and impregnating them with a Facehugger. A Chestburster later rips out of them.
  • The Alien fatality "Killer Queen" has the Alien summon a Queen that proceeds to impale the Alien's opponent with her tail before ripping them in half — a direct homage to the scene in Aliens in which the First Acheron Queen dispatches Bishop in just such a manner.
  • Winning against certain opponents can give rise to unique Chestburster variations, such as a Predalien if the opponent is the Predator or a Chestburster with rock-like skin if the opponent is Tremor. As an additional humorous Easter Egg, this brutality can also give rise to Chestbursters wearing comical accessories, such as the hats of Erron Black, Raiden and Kung Lao, the sunglasses of Johnny and Cassie Cage, the mask of Jason Voorhees, or the faceplate of Kano.
  • Selecting the Alien character and playing against Johnny Cage will cause the latter to shout, "It's game over, man!" during intro sequence, referencing Hudson's iconic line from Aliens.

  • The name of the "Hish-Qu-Ten" Predator is a reference to the Hish interpretation of Predator culture, first introduced in the novel Predator: Forever Midnight.
  • The first feature film based on the Mortal Kombat franchise, released in 1995, was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who also directed Alien vs. Predator.
  • The Alien and the Predator are not the only classic movie characters to appear in Mortal Kombat X — the game also features slasher film villains Jason Voorhees (from Friday the 13th) and Leatherface (from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) as DLC guest fighters. Similarly, the previous game in the series, 2011's Mortal Kombat, featured Freddy Krueger (from A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Kratos (from the God of War series, exclusive to PlayStation versions of the game).
