The Model TB22C Borrowdale–class R Modular Colonial Transfer Vehicle was a model of colony ship manufactured by Lock-Mart Industries. Resembling a train in profile, the Borrowdale–class was built around a central spine bookended by a control capsule and engine section fore and aft. The spine could be outfitted with cargo and personal containers, with the entire ship maintaining integrity through the use of a magnetic field. Individual containers were equipped with life support systems and were able to act as lifeboats in an emergency.
This capability extended to the establishment of a planetary colony founded by the crew of a Borrowdale–class vessel, with containers doubling as buildings and habitation modules. Such conurbations were dubbed "Borrowdale towns". The ship's engine section could be repurposed as a reactor and power supply, with the control capsule used as an operations center. Colonists often interconnected the modules, and further modified the ship components beyond flight capability. While these modifications ran counter to company policy, Colonial Administration rarely penalized such infractions; companies paid off the inspectors, as unlicensed embellishments absolved the company of any responsibility should the colony in question be impacted by unforeseen circumstances.
