Midaphine was a pharmaceutical offering effects such as elevated mood and feelings of infallibility. During his first residency, medical officer Jonathan Clemens harbored an addiction to Midaphine. Having taken a quantity of the drug after a thirty–hour stretch in an ER, Clemens was summoned to deal with an influx of patients following an accident, and inadvertently killed eleven of the thirty injured after prescribing the wrong dose of painkiller. For this misstep, Clemens was sent to a Weyland-Yutani Corporation prison complex on Fiorina 161. Clemens related the incident to Ellen Ripley after her Type 337 EEV crashed on Fiorina in 2179.
Behind the scenes[]
Midaphine is mentioned in the novelization of Alien3 as the cause of Jonathan Clemens' disgrace; this runs counter to his account in the film, in which Clemens divulges to Ellen Ripley that he was drunk instead. As such, despite the scene progressing similarly to its on-screen counterpart, the novelization clearly contradicts the film's events, and thus this article treats Midaphine as non-canon.[1]
