The Mi–220 Krokodil Attack Dropship, also known as the Krokodil or Krok, was a model of dropship used by the Union of Progressive Peoples' military. The UPP's equivalent to the United States Colonial Marine Corps' UD-4 "Cheyenne" Dropship, the Krok was substantially larger and more heavily armed, and only slightly more logy than its United Americas counterpart.
Overview[]
The Mi–220 Krokodil Attack Dropship was designed for the Union of Progressive Peoples' military as an equivalent to the UD-4 "Cheyenne" Dropship used by the United States Colonial Marine Corps. The Krok, as it was also known, was 33.2 meters in length and featured a double–bubble cockpit design that could be traced back to the Mi-24D Hind, a Russian attack helicopter used in the late twentieth century. The lower cockpit seated the pilot and gunner, while the upper cockpit functioned as an observation post and tactical operations center. In emergencies, the Krokodil could be flown from the upper cockpit by way of secondary pilot controls therein. The Krokodil's wingspan was broad and featured space for two docking cradles, with one positioned on either side of the main fuselage; each cradle could accommodate an Ox-440 HAMPV Troop Transport. As a result, when fully loaded, the Krokodil was somewhat of a sitting duck in freefall and when performing atmospheric entry maneuvers, being extremely vulnerable to ground-based artillery.[1]
The Krokodil toted a veritable arsenal of weaponry, being twice as armed as a UD–4 Cheyenne. Located in the dropship's chin turret was a 25mm Gatling gun, while the wings held twelve UPP Karakurt Heavy Anti-tank Missiles. Additional firepower included twelve UPP Amur Medium Air-To-Air Missiles and a UPP Anti-Personnel Missile Pod. For retrieving HAMPV transports on the ground, the Krokodil was outfitted with a dual tow hook and cable system. In spite of its size and ordnance, and a thicker hull, the Krokodil was only a third slower than a UD–4 Cheyenne, being able to reach a speed of Mach 8, though it was less maneuverable.[1] As of 2184, the Krokodil carried a price tag of 2,700,000 United American dollars.[2]
History[]
In 2184, three Krokodils were used by the Union of Progressive Peoples in their invasion of Ariarcus, and were tasked with guarding an oil field on the moon.[3] During the UPP's attack on Pandora later that year, four Krokodils were used by The Union of Progressive People's Army to land Ox HAMPVs at the Morgan's Bluff spaceport.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
The Mi–220 Attack Dropship first appeared in Alien: The Roleplaying Game — Destroyer of Worlds; though that publication identifies the craft as the "Mi–222",[3] this article assumes that the designation given in the subsequent Colonial Marines Operations Manual is correct. During the "Operation: Go Fish" mission in the latter book, an event can be triggered in which a Krokodil is shot down and can be repaired by the players, though this is entirely optional.[5]
