"High recoil and spread coupled with an extremely high rate of fire make this weapon fairly ineffective at anything beyond short–medium range, but incredibly lethal up close."
―Profile of the M39 Submachine Gun (from Aliens: Fireteam Elite)

The M39 Submachine Gun, initially known as the SMA7 and also dubbed the M39, was a submachine gun manufactured by Armat Battlefield Systems. First supplied to special forces in Brazil, the M39 was later used by the United States Colonial Marine Corps, the United Americas, and the Three World Empire.

Development[]

The M39 Submachine Gun was first designed for the Força Brasileira de Segurança Urbana, Brazil's counter–terrorism special forces, under the designation SMA7. Armat Battlefield Systems later developed a variant capable of using the United Americas' standard 10mm Caseless ammunition, and re–labeled the gun as the M39.[1]

Overview[]

The M39 was reliable, easy to maintain, and lethal at short range. However, its high recoil, rate of fire, and spread rendered it practically ineffective at longer range. Despite those drawbacks, the M39's qualities led to its broad acceptance among rear–area forces, military police, urban assault teams, and the United States Colonial Marine Corps' EVA assault teams and boarding parties. The weapon also become an icon of elite Colonial Marine Raider battalions.[1]

Notable users[]

Originally manufactured in 2175 for Brazilian counter–terror units, the M39 also saw service among the Colonial Marines, who adopted it as the M39 in 2179. It was also used by the national services of the United Americas and the Three World Empire, as well as corporate security services, local law enforcement agencies, and private military contractors.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The M39 Submachine Gun appears in Aliens: Fireteam Elite and can be acquired via a random drop by finishing a mission in Standard difficulty. It can be equipped by Gunner, Technician, Phalanx, Recon, and Lancer classes.[1]
