The Linna 349 Campaign was a military campaign fought between the United States Colonial Marine Corps and a rebel faction on the Three World Empire colony world of Linna 349. Taking place between 2174 and 2175, the Linna 349 Campaign saw a decisive victory for the USCM.

History[]

Rebellion[]

"The incinerator rifles were hardcore, man. We usedta call 'em Bake-a-Flakes…y'know, like the cereal commercial. They were harsh against bugboys and critters, but only a certified crazy would carry one. At Neusheune, the bugboy snipers began plinking the flame units, trying to explode the fuel cell with a single shot. If they hit, everything within ten meters would go, like, FOOM! Once we heard about that, we instinctively kept away from the Bake-a-Flakers. Never knew when one was gonna become a flamer!"
―Private First Class Matt "Superspunk" Hanna (from Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual)

In 2174, a rebel faction based on the Three World Empire colony world of Linna 349 was inspired by the Australian revolt against the 3WE on Earth. Thereafter, the faction staged a coup and attempted to seize control of the government; the 3WE lacked the resources in the Outer Rim Territories to handle the situation, and sought the assistance of the United Americas Allied Command.[1] In exchange for new tariffs and export treaties, the United Americas deployed the United States Colonial Marine Corps to Linna 349 to eradicate the rebellion. Initially, the Marines considered the rebels—whom they nicknamed "Bug-Boys"—and their raids little more than a nuisance,[2] although several Marines fell victim to sniping tactics used by the rebels at the Neusheune colony targeting their flamethrowers' fuel canisters.[3] The Marines also struggled against the rebels' superior detection equipment in localities such as the Trobriands and Parrot's Beak.

No kill like overkill[]

"We came outta that APC spitting sweat and blood. Up ahead we heard screaming as the twenty-mike-mike chopped the bugboys into salad. Sarge screamed 'Split Orange' an' we broke into a four-by-four formation, charging the hill with the smarts in support and the APC on overwatch. The bugboys saw us coming and launched a buzz-bomb. They'd have had us cold if it weren't for the Loot' in the APC—he caught their launch flash and iced the suckers with the peebees before their bomb even left the tube. S'damndest thing I ever saw!"
―Corporal Lynda Gerhart (from Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual)

As combat intensified, Marines of the 3rd Tank Battalion were ambushed on Highway Two by rebels armed with anti-tank weapons purchased from Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The Marines responded by opening fire with anti-personnel flechette rounds and flamethrowers into the trees lining the highway, killing any rebels that had failed to flee. As a result, the Marines survived the battle with the loss of one tank.[4] During a patrol on Route 3 in the Triobriands, the M22 Jackson tank "Killer Clown" destroyed four enemy tanks.[5] The Marines experienced targeting problems while using M112 HIMAT missiles against the French CDC-80 tanks acquired by the rebels due to the tanks' design, and were forced to recalibrate them.[6] The Marines also deployed M577 Armored Personnel Carriers such as "Daisycutter" against rebel infantry,[7] and used M292A2 self-propelled artillery during the assault on the Harare colony.[8] In 2175, the conflict escalated when the rebels acquired more sophisticated weapons from an unidentified source, with UA Intelligence believing that source to be Hyperdyne Systems.[1] This illicit cache included ASAT missiles;[9] the rebels used two of these missiles to launch an orbital strike on the USCMC frigate USS Sulaco, crippling it. In response the USCMC deployed an overwhelming number of ships, Marines, heavy equipment, and tanks to retake Linna 349, ending the conflict.[1]

Occupation and unrest[]

With the rebellion squashed, the USCMC maintained a peacekeeping force on Linna 349 against the will of the Three World Empire, which issued a demand to release the world.[2] As of 2183, the United Americas still occupied the planet, much to 3WE Governor Vihaa Reddy's irritation.[10]
