- "You fight with rage."
"I fight like father!"
"You are not father, you are Dek." - ―Kwei and Dek during their fight (from Predator: Badlands)
Kwei was a Yautja, son of Njohrr, a clan leader,[2] and the older brother of the outcast Dek.
His younger brother ended up being a runt, and the weakest of the clan, which made him hated by their father who ordered Kwei to kill Dek. But Kwei disobeyed his father and began training and preparing Dek for his first hunt.[3]
Personality and traits[]
- "You kept this toy?!"
"You remember what happened..."
"I lost my fang!"
"And you saved my life. You protected me." - ―Dek and Kwei, about a toy the latter kept since the former saved his life during an incident in their youth while preparing for the departure to Genna (from Predator: Badlands)
Kwei was a Yautja with scaly, reddish-brown skin. He wore the characteristic Yautja dreadlocks that extended from the top of his head and also had some sharp spikes on his head. Unlike his younger brother, Dek, Kwei was a tall and muscular Yautja.
Although he saw Dek as the weakest of his clan,[4] Kwei had a great fondness for his younger brother even if he couldn't always demonstrate it, and he believed that Dek deserved the chance to hunt and prove himself.[2]
Biography[]
Childhood[]
Kwei was born on Yautja Prime as the oldest son of Njohrr, a renowned hunter and leader of his own Clan, and his mate. His father came from a long line of great hunters, and Kwei was raised to continue that legacy. Kwei also had a younger brother named Dek, but while Kwei was born big and strong, Dek ended up being the runt of the litter, being a smaller and weaker Yautja than the others. This caused his father to despise Dek, but Kwei and his brother maintained a very close relationship as children and continued to maintain it as they grew up.
At some point during his childhood, Kwei's life was in danger and Dek saved him by giving him a toy, a toy that Kwei kept to always remember that day.
Kwei finally successfully completed his first hunt, becoming a Blooded, an official member of his clan, and receiving a cloaking device as proof of his new rank.
Protecting Dek[]
Over the years, Kwei went on several hunts, acquiring many trophies which he displayed on his ship, but while he became a respected Yautja, his brother Dek remained a small and weak Yautja who hadn't completed his first hunt yet. All of this caused Kwei to receive orders from his father to kill Dek, as he believed that Dek was a disgrace to the Clan and that he would only bring them honor in his death, but Kwei disobeyed; although he shared his father's opinion that Dek was weak, Kwei loved his brother and was determined to make him a hunter worthy of the Clan.
When Dek thought he was ready for his first hunt, Kwei met his brother in a cave where they both had a training fight.
After the fight, Kwei invited Dek to his ship, where the two began planning Dek's first hunt. His brother decided he wanted to go to the planet Genna, the most dangerous planet in the universe, and hunt the legendary monster the Kalisk, a beast feared even by their father. Kwei warned his brother that failure meant death, to which Dek promised he wouldn't fail.
Unfortunately, while they were preparing the journey to Genna, Njohrr arrived, having tracked them to a wasteland in Yautja Prime. There, Kwei was confronted by his father for disobeying his orders to kill Dek. Following this, Dek was trapped in a laser chain device set up by Njohrr, who again ordered him to execute Dek. Apparently accepting his father's will, Kwei drew his energy sword and placed it against Dek's neck, intending to decapitate him. When his brother begged for mercy, Kwei simply told Dek to be brave. After this, Kwei looked at his father again, as if to plead for mercy, but when Njohrr remained silent, Kwei raised his sword towards Dek.[5]
Final Fight[]
Then, in a sudden act, he swung his sword down unto the laser chain device, destroying it and freeing Dek from his bondage. Kwei then remotely activated Dek's shoulder cannon, harpooning to the inner wall of the ship, propelling and dragging Dek inside the ship. But Dek, knowing his brother is in big trouble, removed the device on his shoulder and tried to rescue him, only for Kwei to shut the energy door onto him, unable to reach his brother. What followed next was a tense sword fight between Father and Son, and Dek watched helplessly on the other side. It was a tough fight for Kwei, but in the end, his arm was sliced off by Njohrr, bleeding and falling to the ground. With his sword and wrist gauntlet on his chopped-off arm a few meters away, Dek pleaded for Kwei to grab the sword. Then, Njohrr plunged his sword into Kwei's chest from the back, horrifying Dek and grabbed on to his dreadlocks, for the inevitable act. But against Dek's plead, he grabbed his gauntlet and initiated the launch sequence on his ship, ready for takeoff. With his last words, "Bring it home!", Kwei believed in Dek that despite his weakness and against all odds, he can make him and his clan proud until he was beheaded by Njohrr. Dek cried and mourned of his brother's death before his eyes as the ship exited Yautja Prime, leaving Njohrr looking on before leaving back to his base.
Legacy[]
Despite his death, Kwei proved his father wrong after sending Dek to Genna. Though Dek did not successfully kill the Kalisk and deliver his trophy back to his clan, Dek has shown that he learned so much with the help of Thia and Bud by his side, that there is more to life than being restricted to his clan's customs and strict values. By that, he defeats his father's guards and engages him in a tense duel. Even with Njohrr in his invisible cloak, Dek activated his ship's thrusters, creating a large cloud of sand dust and revealing Njohrr as his cloak flickered. Dek ultimately slices off Njohrr's arm and throws down the laser chain device, putting his father in place. Njohrr realized of what Dek has become and offered him to yield and return back to his clan. But Dek refused, saying that he has forged his own clan, angering Njohrr until he was brutally mauled to death from behind by Bud in her adolescence.
