Keyes was a member of the United States Colonial Marine Corps. He was part of a search and rescue mission sent to LV-426 aboard the USS Sephora in 2179 to investigate the disappearance of the USS Sulaco and its crew 17 weeks earlier. Keyes died early in the mission after being impregnated with a Chestburster.

Keyes was station on the USS Sephora in October 2179 which was sent to investigate the rediscovered USS Sulaco above LV-426.  He was part of Rhino 2-3, and was captured by Xenomorphs aboard the Sulaco and impregnated with a Chestburster. Keyes was the last member of Rhino 2-3 alive in the Sulaco's Hive.

Keyes's death.

He was rescued by Corporal Christopher Winter. On the way back to the Sephora, Keyes exhibited reckless behavior by grabbing the flight recorder before meeting up with O'Neal in the hangar. After the firefight, the Chestburster inside him hatched. In a panic, Keyes pulled out and detonated a grenade, breaching the umbilical between the ships, killing himself and Paluski, and stranding the survivors on the Sulaco.

Keyes had the typical personality of a Colonial Marine but he was far more reckless and impulsive, he disobeyed orders and unnecessarily blew up a dropship which could have been used to escape. He also killed and endangered fellow Marines simply to end his own pain when the Chestburster started emerging from his chest.

After Keyes was rescued by Cpl. Winter, he grabbed an M37A2 Pump Shotgun from the floor and used it as his weapon of choice. He also carried an M314 Motion Tracker. Like most Marines, Keyes wore an M10 Pattern Ballistic Helmet and M3 Pattern Personal Armor. Keyes briefly used a ComTech Hacking Device to bypass the hangar door on the Sulaco. He also had at least two M40 HEDP Grenades on him.
