Biography

Honor Bound

"I belong here with them."
Hanzo

Through much of his time with the group on the game preserve planet, Hanzo was a very quiet and distant individual. After the ensuing panic-stricken battle between Royce, Nikolai and Cuchillo, as well as Isabelle who was leading them to more parachute landing locations, he chose not to join the group, instead almost stalking them. However, a large shrine-like trophy "case" riddled with human skulls catches his eye instead. Since his decision not to join the group, he is the last one to be found by them, now with two more members, looking at this very same shrine. He eventually joins the group but remains incredibly quiet in all situations, both intense and calm. He is given several orders by Royce, more so than other members of the group (probably due to his understanding of the Yakuza). When the Super Predators first attack the group at the Predator campsite, he is one of three men who remains to stand and fire at the Predators, the other's being Royce and Nikolai. He manages to make his way to Noland's hideout with the remaining group members, and he finally speaks out of interest from finding an ancient Japanese Katana in almost perfect condition, proclaiming that they've "been doing this for a long time". Edwin rebuttals interest that he knows English and asks why he doesn't say more, but Hanzo reveals to Edwin that he "talks too much" and shows him two missing fingers, the result of the act of Yubitsume. He is successful in escaping the hideout after Noland's betrayal (and Nikolai's sacrifice), where Stans the death-row inmate is attacked. He yells at the remaining four to run while he deals with the Berserker Predator. He has been incredibly lucky thus far being among the last to survive, but realizes that even if Stans is successful in killing the Berserker, there is still one more Predator to deal with.

Duel and death

He decides to stop running and stand and fight with the Katana that he had taken from Noland's lair. Royce acknowledges what he's doing, and he, Isabelle and Edwin leave him. Hanzo is then approached by the Falconer Predator. Realizing that the Predator is a creature of honor, he engages in an intense one-on-one battle with it. Due to his smaller size and agile reflexes, he is able to strike it several times, but the creature's strength and constitution remains too powerful to be killed from blood loss. Hanzo is also wounded, and is slashed across the back by the Predator's blade. Realizing that he can't kill it with this method, he lunges at the Predator in an all or nothing charge and strikes it against its Abdomen, severely wounding it. The Predator drops to the ground and dies shortly afterwards, and Hanzo appears victorious. But Hanzo himself had his chest sliced open and gasps for air before he collapses and dies. In his death, he had destroyed another Predator, but unfortunately, another still remained.

Personality & Traits

When Edwin notices Hanzo can speak English, he asks him why he doesn't talk more. Hanzo responds that he talks too much and reveals that he is missing his leftmost two fingers, having performed yubitsume. In the Yakuza when a member talks against a gang leader or speaks out of turn, a finger joint is cut off. Hanzo is shown to be quite brave as he shows no fear when fighting Falconer. Hanzo also seems to be compassionate, as shown on two occasions when he quietly raises his pistol at Stans when he threatens Mombasa when no one else would, and in his final stand against the Predator, leaving the others with time to escape. He also seems to have a slightly joking and talkative side that's willingly kept hidden until he chooses, seen when he raises his hand to Edwin to show him his missing fingers while smiling. As stated above, this correlates with the reason his fingers were removed in the first place. Hanzo has known to how to wield the katana with great skill as shown during his duel with the Falconer Predator and he even managed to kill the Predator before dying from his wounds.

Equipment

Hanzo uses a Beretta 92FS Inox with a custom compensator and grips. He later acquires an ancient Japanese Katana from Noland's weapon cache, apparently was forged during the feudal era of Japan.

Trivia

  • Hanzo's final fight with the Falconer Predator is an homage to the scene in the original film, where Billy challenges the Jungle Predator to a one on one knife fight. Unlike the original scene, however, the fight is shown, and Hanzo is victorious but at the cost of his own life.
  • His first name could also be a reference to a highly skilled ninja from feudal Japan, Hattori Hanzo.
  • Save for in his introductory scene, he went the entirety of the film without shoes.
