"Grendel" was the name given to a Yautja who embarked on a hunt in the Viking era.

Biography[]

Pre-841 A.D.[]

At some point, Grendel lost his right arm and had it replaced with a powerful prosthetic device capable of generating sonic blasts.

Hunting Ursa and Her Clan[]

Grendel went on a hunt in Scandinavia in the year of 841 A.D., where he watches as Viking warrior Ursa leads her son Anders and their clan on an expedition to destroy the Krivich tribe and their leader, Zoran, who was responsible for the death of Ursa's father. The cloaked Yautja stalked and secretly observed them, even following them all the way to Zoran's fortress. After Ursa and her warriors slaughtered Zoran's clan, and Ursa confronts him in his fortress. Zoran chastises Ursa before Anders kills him. Immediately after the battle, that is when the Yautja reveals himself. The shocked Viking of Ursa's clan thinking they're up against Grendel, all attempt to fight back against the hulking alien monster, but they were no match for their otherworldly enemy as he easily slaughtered and brutally killed all of Ursa's clan members one by one and seriously injuring Anders.

Endgame[]

Grendel pursues Ursa to a frozen lake littered with Viking ship wrecks where she figues out to use the ice she was under to hide herself from the Yautja's own heat vision. During their final duel Ursa takes advantage of her enemy's weakness and manages to lure her adversary and takes him with her under the ice where she uses an anchor chain and when he attempts to fire his own weapon at her, Ursa use's her shield to protect her as the deadly shock-wave forces the Yautja backwards towards the anchor stabbing him through the back of the head and out his mouth, killing him. Ursa herself manages to survive her fight with the Yautja. Not long after she killed the Yautja, Ursa's own son Anders succumbs to his wounds and dies in her arms.

Personality and traits[]

This Yautja seemed to follow the Yautja Honor Code carried out by mainstream Yautjas, because he uses his cloak to maintain a low profile while stalking and observing potential preys. Although, his preferred approach in testing their mettle was facing them head-on as opposed of stealthily taking them out one by one until the most tenacious and formidable of such preys revealed themselves.

His preferred fighting style — pounding the opponent into submission — served him well thanks to being backed by his great endurance against blows and elements as well as his signature prosthetic. However, crafty opponents would take note of how detrimental such form's lack of defense and poor battlefield control ability and took advantage of it accordingly.

The Yautja was tall and muscular, wearing sparse body armor. His right arm had since replaced with a powerful prosthetic capable of generating sonic blasts.

Equipment[]

This Yautja was among sparsely equipped hunters; he didn't bring Medicomp during his hunt at Viking Age-era Scandinavia, let alone Wrist Gauntlet. Instead, he utilized his signature prosthetic to batter his preys into pulp.

Behind the Scenes[]

Dane Hallett came up with three different alternate designs for Grendel where they mostly had Jungle Hunter as the basis and just as sparsely equipped. One of the designs showed him with dreadlocks that had since fell off, more closed eyes, and frostbite scars sustained from repeated exposure to colder climate; another showed still intact dreadlocks and ridged skull in the fashion not unlike one of skulls in Lost Tribe's trophy case as seen in Predator 2, and lastly featured a pair of horns, larger teeth and mandibles, and tiger-like color scheme. Prior to settling with sonic prosthetic, combistick and mace-like prosthetic were considered for Grendel's signature weapon.[1][2]

In addition of Grendel's initial design which depicted him as a member of mainstream Yautja with barrel-chested physique and sparse clothing adorned with tropies from previous human warriors he killed prior to facing Ursa's raiding party and wrist gauntlet on his left arm, Farzad Varahramyan came up with different takes on his signature sonic prosthetic. One had dome-shaped end which eventually chosen and finalized, whereas another resembled actual fist and bear paw complete with retractable claws. Regardless, an aspect such design in common was a lever to activate it, which meant to echo the lever of medieval-era crossbows.[3]
