Aliens versus Predator 2 is a 2001 first-person shooter video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Sierra Entertainment and Fox Interactive for the PC. A Mac port was later released in 2003. The game is a sequel to 1999's Aliens versus Predator, although its plot does not connect to the previous game. Instead it follows events on the planet LV-1201, where a Weyland-Yutani Corporation research facility has become the center of a large-scale Xenomorph outbreak. A detachment of Colonial Marines is dispatched to investigate, while the Predators also send several of their kind to conduct a Hunt on the planet.

Aliens vs Predator 2 is the third game of the Alien vs. Predator franchise. As with the previous game, it features three playable campaigns, one each for the Aliens, the Predators and the Colonial Marines. Unlike the previous title, however, the campaigns are all related and take place at the same time and in the same location, and while they never actually engage with each other, characters from different campaigns occasionally cross paths. Sierra released an expansion to the game titled Aliens versus Predator 2: Primal Hunt in 2002. A further unrelated sequel, Aliens vs. Predator, followed in 2010.

The game is noted for being in rights limbo due to the circumstances of its development which has led to the game being unavailable for purchase legally on any digital stores unlike the 1999's game and the 2010's game.

Synopsis[]

Aliens versus Predator 2 takes place predominantly in the year 2231, some 52 years after the events of Aliens and Alien3. In the wake of Ellen Ripley's death on Fiorina "Fury" 161, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation returned to the derelict spacecraft on LV-426 and deciphered the vessel's flight telemetry, in turn leading them to the verdant planet LV-1201. There they discovered the ruins of the Engineer civilization, now infested with Xenomorphs. After numerous failed expeditions, the company eventually succeeded in establishing a long-term research facility on LV-1201 under the direction of Dr. Eisenberg. With a security force of mercenaries from the Iron Bears for protection, led by mercenary General Vassili Rykov, the Weyland-Yutani scientists quickly began researching not only the Xenomorphs but also the mysterious ruins in which they were found.

Following a major containment breach, the research complex is almost completely overrun by Xenomorphs, and a distress signal is sent to the United States Colonial Marine Corps. Arriving aboard the USS Verloc, the Marines quickly find that they must contend not only with the voracious Xenomorphs now swarming through the research base, but also several Yautja that seek to use the chaos for a chance to hunt and perhaps even settle a score with Rykov following a past encounter.

First person view of the Predator.

  • Prince is the playable Yautja character in the game. 19 years before, he and his clan attacked a Weyland-Yutani outpost, where he chased and wounded Vassili Rykov, a young Colonial Marine at the time. In the present day, Prince's clan responds to the distress call sent by the Ancient Predator in Primal Hunt, leading to a rematch with Rykov on LV-1201.

Major characters[]

  • Tomiko is a Weyland-Yutani research scientist working to uncover the company's illegal activities on LV-1201 to avenge her brother, whom she believes was murdered as part of a cover-up scheme.
  • Dr. Arnaud Eisenberg is the head researcher in charge of the LV-1201 facility. He was the sole survivor of a disastrous first expedition; when a massive storm cut off his outpost's security systems and communications, he was forced to kill and eat his colleagues. He serves as the primary antagonist of the Alien campaign.
  • General Vassili Rykov is the head of the Iron Bears or "Corporates", a group of private military contractors employed by Weyland-Yutani, and serves as the primary antagonist of the Predator campaign.
  • Major Dunya is General Rykov's second-in-command. Her fiance and squadmate, Dimitri, is killed when a power failure inadvertantly caused by the marines allows the Xenomorphs access to the Pods. As a result, she blames Harrison for her loss.
  • The Empress is the primary Xenomorph Queen on LV-1201. Eisenberg's efforts are focused on capturing and controlling her. She is larger than the younger Queens and is the main antagonist of the Marine campaign.
  • Major Thomas McCain is the commanding officer of the Colonial Marines dispatched to LV-1201 at Weyland-Yutani's request. He is a fine leader, but is oblivious to what Rykov and Eisenberg have in store for him and his Marines.
  • The Predalien is a Yautja-born Xenomorph spawned from one of Prince's captive clanmates during Weyland-Yutani's experiments. It is the only character in the game that interacts with all three protagonists in some way.

Individual Plots[]

Alien[]

An introductory flashback shows that Dr. Eisenberg was the only survivor of the first scientific expedition to LV-1201, which was decimated by the Xenomorphs. Eisenberg himself was forced to cannibalize his colleagues in order to survive until a rescue ship could arrive.

Ten years later[1] and now in charge of the research facility on LV-1201, Eisenberg finds himself under increasing pressure from Weyland-Yutani, who have sent an auditor to oversee the problems at the facility, problems that include artifacts disappearing, unauthorized research and even the complete loss of one of the outlying facilities, known as Pod 5 (the events of which are seen in the Primal Hunt expansion pack). The oversight committee is getting worried, although Eisenberg insists he will rectify the issues.

Meanwhile, Major Dunya of the Iron Bears delivers a large container to Captain Richter of the cargo vessel Aurora; Richter has been smuggling artifacts stolen by the Iron Bears off-world. Noting that the crate is larger than normal, he attempts to scan it, but finds the container is shielded against scanning. Richter is called away to a meeting with General Rykov and, while refueling the Aurora, the crate is knocked over, revealing a Xenomorph Egg within. The disturbed Egg hatches and the player-controlled Facehugger emerges. The Facehugger leaves the ship through umbilical ductwork and begins to track an irritable guard, Cisco, through the Primary Operations Complex (POC). When Cisco retires to his quarters for a nap, the Facehugger springs on him and impregnates him.

In due time, the player-controlled Chestburster hatches, killing Cisco. It flees through an open window and proceeds through the POC until it finds nourishment — cats apparently kept for research purposes. It feeds and rapidly molts into a full-grown Drone. The Drone immediately begins fighting its way through the POC, releasing other Xenomorphs being kept as test subjects along the way. It reaches the lower levels, finally encountering a Predator that has been stalking it, probably believing it would make a suitable challenge. The Predator activates its Self-Destruct Device when the Drone mortally wounds it, and the resulting explosion breaches the POC's drainage system, allowing the Drone to escape. At the same time, the breach also allows thousands of Xenomorphs into the POC, and the research personnel quickly send a distress call to the United States Colonial Marine Corps.

Six weeks later, the Drone and its brethren infiltrate one of the facility's Pods during a brief security failure unwittingly caused by Corporal Harrison, part of the recently arrived USCM taskforce. As the Xenomorphs attack, they kill several Iron Bear troopers, including Dimitri. The player-controlled Drone takes the opportunity to wreak havoc, killing dozens of guards and scientists, releasing a Predalien (spawned from the company's experiments with a group of captive Predators), and finally liberating an entire artificial Hive created by the research team within the Pod. Along the way, it also kills several scientists who are preparing to impregnate a captured Predator, known as Prince, with a Chestburster.

Eisenberg has taken advantage of the Marines' arrival to initiate the Large Mass Specimen Extraction, a project to capture the Xenomorph Empress. As part of the plan, combat synthetics have wired explosive charges throughout the tunnels of the Hive. Learning of this, the Drone leaves the Pods and rushes to disable the explosives.

Despite the Drone's efforts, the Empress is captured by the science team. The Drone pursues her captors, including Eisenberg himself, tracking through an archaeological site to a dropship landing pad, killing numerous guards, civilians and Iron Bears along the way. At the pad, the Drone kills two Predators and sabotages the pad's support machinery, causing the dropship to crash. Infuriated, Eisenberg attacks the Drone directly, although he is quickly overpowered. A final cutscene reveals that Eisenberg (in his current incarnation) is actually an android, and that he has been cocooned within the Empress' chamber. His limbs have been removed and his screams echo through the Hive, as a Queen and the Drone gloat.

With the Forward Observation Pods and Primary Operations Complex both destroyed by Tomiko, Weyland-Yutani is forced to abandon the planet. The primary Xenomorph Hive survives the blast, and remains intact.

Colonial Marine[]

The player controls Corporal Harrison, a Marine aboard the Conestoga-class USS Verloc, which is carrying a small contingent of Colonial Marines to LV-1201 under the command of Major McCain in response to a distress call sent from the research station there. Their mission is to rescue survivors and secure the facility until the 6th Battalion can arrive in force.

Upon arrival, two dropships are deployed to the Primary Operations Complex (POC), but they are separated by hurricane winds and one is damaged. Harrison, with Red Team, is tasked with restoring power and activating a landing beacon to facilitate further airborne operations. While trying to restore the local security grid, he awakens the Xenomorphs that had lain dormant following their conquest of the POC. Most of the Marines are able to evacuate, but Sergeant Hall is captured by the Xenomorphs. Harrison tracks her to an area of the POC that has been converted to a Hive, but he finds that Hall has already been impregnated with a Chestburster. She dies as Harrison finds her.

With the POC now relatively secure, Red Team attempts to reach the Pods in search of survivors, leaving White Team behind. Harrison is sent ahead through the tunnel network that connects the POC to the Pods so that he can deactivate the security measures that are preventing the Marines' APCs from proceeding. However, in the process, he accidentally cuts the security to the Pods themselves, allowing the Xenomorphs, including one particularly dangerous Drone, to attack.

When Red Team reaches the Pods, Dr. Eisenberg and General Rykov inform them that three archaeological teams have been stranded within a massive nearby Hive as a result of the security breach. The Marines volunteer to rescue the archaeologists — but the "rescue mission" is actually part of an elaborate conspiracy by Rykov and Eisenberg to kill the Marines themselves.

As Harrison tries to establish a communication link with the POC and the orbiting Verloc, he is attacked by Major Dunya of the Iron Bears, whose fiancé Dimitri was killed when the Pods were breached by the Xenomorphs — as Harrison unintentionally caused the breach, she holds him responsible for Dimitri's death. She knocks the Corporal out and throws him into a prison cell within the Pods, used to hold convict laborers, telling his comrades that he was killed in a confrontation with an escaped convict. Harrison soon escapes, and during his flight he kills an escaped Predalien and unknowingly releases the Predator Prince from captivity. Later, Harrison is contacted by a mysterious person using a voice scrambler, and is instructed to pick up a data disk hidden in one of the labs in exchange for help returning to his team. Reluctantly, Harrison complies.

As Harrison reaches the Pod's lowest levels, he is attacked by a rogue Predalien (the same one released by the Alien protagonist). After killing the hybrid, Harrison reaches a cargo bay where he witnesses Prince escape by hijacking a dropship. Harrison picks up new equipment and kills Rykov's right hand man Ivan, along with two other Iron Bears, before eliminating another mercenary in an "Exosuit", a bipedal armored combat vehicle. His way now clear, he finally escapes the Pods.

Returning to the POC to find White Team, Harrison learns that the mysterious person who directed him to recover the data disk is Tomiko, an assemblyman's daughter who signed up for an internship on LV-1201 to find out what had happened to her brother, who she suspects was murdered. The data disk contains records of all the illegal activities taking place on the planet, which Tomiko wants to present to her father in an attempt to hold Weyland-Yutani accountable for its crimes.

Harrison locates several members of White Team, but they are all killed by Xenomorphs or Predators before Harrison can activate the landing beacon for an incoming dropship. Harrison manages to kill a Predator himself before reaching the dropship. Tomiko transmits the coordinates of an old entry site to the Hive, and Harrison, now in his own Exosuit, proceeds after his fellow Marines whom Rykov has stranded within. Along the way, he must clear an infestation from some ancient extraterrestrial technology. His Exosuit is damaged during a fall, forcing him to proceed the rest of the way on foot. He locates his team in a massive chamber where the fossilized remains of an Engineer reside. A Xenomorph Queen attacks the squad, but Harrison is able to repel her so that he and the rest of the Marines can escape via dropship. The Queen attacks again, but the dropship bombards her with missiles, killing her.

As the dropship puts distance between itself and the Hive, Tomiko overloads the fusion reactors in the Pods, destroying the research facility and apparently killing herself. When the Marines return to the Verloc, McCain recommends abandoning any further rescue or salvage attempts on LV-1201, and the ship departs.

Predator[]

Nineteen years before the events of the game, Vassili Rykov is a Colonial Marine stationed at a Weyland-Yutani outpost on the planet Korari when it is attacked by a Predator, a high-ranking clan member known as Prince. Prince severely injures Rykov, paralyzing him, but he survives the attack, although he requires extensive surgery, including the implantation of an artificial spine. The events leave Rykov with a deep-seated, obsessive hatred for the Predators.

Nineteen years later, Prince and his clan land on LV-1201 after intercepting the distress call sent by the Ancient Predator in the Primal Hunt expansion. Prince, owing to his status, is equipped with better armor, a more elaborate bio-helmet and more potent weaponry than his clan mates. After a quick human slaughter and a meeting with other Predators, who provide new weaponry, Prince discovers that not only to Xenomorphs reside on the planet, but two of his clanmates have been captured by the Iron Bears. Pursuing the mercenaries into the Pods, the Predator eventually succumbs to experimental elctro-magnetic pulse grenades which render his equipment useless and result in his capture.

Rykov, now a general and in charge of the Iron Bears stationed on LV-1201, places Prince in a lab where he remains in stasis for over six weeks. During this time, Rykov learns that he has captured the very individual responsible for his injuries on Korari, and the General seizes his chance to exact his revenge, intending for Prince to die slowly and painfully. Prince is subjected to a myriad of virulent diseases, although his advanced immune system renders him largely unaffected. An attempt to impregnate him with a Chestburster is also thwarted when a rampant Xenomorph Drone kills the scientist trying to carry out the procedure. Finally, Prince is inadvertently released by Corporal Harrison and, despite the infections he is suffering from, powers through a horde of humans, reclaims his equipment and sets off in pursuit of Rykov.

After a dramatic escape aboard a dropship, Prince ends up in a network of caves connected to the Pods' sewer lines. Descending deep underground, he fights through an infestation of Xenomorphs (including two Predaliens) and eventually manages to signal his clan using human technology. The Predator clan promptly arrive and re-arm Prince, who then sets off to finish Rykov once and for all. Following Rykov, now encased in an Exosuit, deep into the Xenomorph Hive, Prince fights his way through hordes of Xenomorphs, even managing to kill a Queen. He finally makes it to the heart of the Hive for a climactic battle with General Rykov. Overcoming his enemy, the Predator claims Rykov's synthetic spine as his trophy after twenty years of chase.

In a final cut scene, the USS Verloc is seen departing LV-1201 with the surviving Colonial Marines aboard. As it heads into deep space, the Predators can be seen stalking the ship in their own sleek battleship, chasing their next hunt.

Voice Cast[]

Gameplay[]

Similarly to the previous Aliens versus Predator video game, Aliens versus Predator 2 is primarily a first-person shooter (FPS) that uniquely gives the player a choice of three characters/species — the Alien, the Predator and the Colonial Marine — each of which his its own distinct set of weapons and abilities. The storyline additionally features a fourth, non-playable faction, the Iron Bears or "Corporates", a heavily-armed mercenary group working for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The Iron Bears are a playable faction in the game's multilayer component, although gameplay-wise they are largely similar to the Colonial Marines.

The gameplay remains similar to the preceding game, although there have been some changes made to each species: for example, the Predator now has the ability to recharge his own energy, the Alien can now destroy objects in the environment and the Marine has gained several new weapons, along with the ability to pilot an "Exosuit" combat mech for one level.

Intersecting stories[]

Another new feature of the game compared to previous titles is the fact that each of it's three campaigns are concurrent and interwoven. Although the three player characters never actually fight each other (for obvious gameplay reasons), they do occasionally cross paths and influence each other's journey. Notable examples include:

  • The Drone causes the security breach in the POC that leads to the USCM being called to LV-1201.
  • Harrison unwittingly causes the security failure that allows the Drone into the Pods.
  • The Drone kills scientists preparing to impregnate Prince with a Chestburster.
  • Harrison unintentionally releases Prince from captivity.

All three characters also hear the same broadcast inside the pods referring to Operation Savior being at "yellow status". Additionally, both Prince and the player Drone are mentioned by guards overheard by Harrison while he is trying to escape the Pods. In another instance, the player Alien overhears McCain and Eisenberg talking about the apparent death of Harrison.

Multiplayer[]

The game's multiplayer features various modes:

  • Deathmatch - a free-for all in which all players compete against one another.
  • Team Deathmatch - a deathmatch in which the players are divided in four races or factions: Aliens, Predators, Marines and Corporates.
  • Hunt - the players are divided in two teams, the Hunters and the Prey. Hunters accumulate points by killing Prey, whereas the Prey can become Hunters by killing a Hunter.
  • Survivor - all players start out as Defenders. If a player is killed, they become a Mutant which can accumulate points by killing Defenders. Defenders accumulate points by staying alive without becoming Mutants.
  • Overrun - a timed mode similar to Survivor, but each player has a finite number of lives. The team with the most points (i.e. the fewest amount of deaths) wins.
  • Evacuation - the players are divided in two teams - Attackers and Defenders - with a finite number of lives. The Attackers win by killing Defenders, whereas Defenders win by reaching the map's evacuation point and keeping at least one member alive there for at least ten seconds.

The four races/factions each have four playable characters:

  • Aliens: Drone, Runner, Predalien and Praetorian. After a set number of kills, the player will become a Queen, remaining in that state until killed. The Queen cannot be selected from the multiplayer menu.
  • Predators: Predator (modeled after Prince), Light Predator, Heavy Predator and Assault Predator.
  • Marines: Harrison (Specialist), Jones (Heavy Weapons), Johnson (Demolitions) and Ichiro (Sniper).
  • Corporates: Dimitri (AT Officer), Rykov (Heavy Weapons), Ivan (Specialist) and Dunya (Trooper).

Most characters also appear in the single player campaign, except for Ichiro and the Assault Predator (bar a cameo that requires cheats to reveal). Each character has its own strengths and weaknesses. For Aliens, these are mostly differentiations in strength and speed, as well as the lack of a headbite for the Predalien and lack of wall-walking ability and pounce attack for the Praetorian. For Marines and Corporates, the differentiations are limited to available weapons for their class (unless the host has enabled all weapons). For Predators, it means both strength and speed differences and available weapons. Both Marines and Corporates have access to Exosuits scattered throughout the map.

Multiplayer also features an optional Alien Life Cycle mode, in which all Alien players start out as Facehuggers and must find a suitable host, after which they become Chestbursters and must remain alive until they moult into their adult form. Their adult form will differ based on the selected host:

  • Predators produce Predaliens
  • Marines produce Drones
  • Corporates produce Runners

The multiplayer mode features a wide variety of maps, which will each suit every class differently. Some maps feature wide open spaces which allow for sniping, others favor close quarters combat and have hidden passages for sneak attacks. Most maps are original, except for several which are locations from either the game's cutscenes (the interior of the USS Verloc and the compound on Korari) or the Alien films (the Fiorina 161 Class C Work Correctional Unit from Alien 3 and the USM Auriga from Alien Resurrection, which also includes a docked Betty). Fanmade custom maps also exist.

Sierra shut down AvP2's multiplayer servers in November 2008, but the fan community has kept private servers up and running into the present day.

Timeline of events[]

The events depicted in Aliens versus Predator 2: Primal Hunt are also included here.

  • 1730 - The Yautja find LV-1201 and set up a hunting ground around the Xenomorph, using an Engineer artifact to keep them from getting out of control. This fails, and the Yautja abandon the planet. The Ancient Predator remains trapped in a stasis field after being impregnated by a Facehugger.
  • July 3, 2211 - Vassili Rykov is injured by Prince on Korari.
  • October 15, 2221 - January 10, 2222 - The Weyland-Yutani Corporation finds LV-1201 using the flight telemetry of the derelict on LV-426. Dr. Eisenberg is the sole survivor of an early settlement attempt. Over the next ten years, the Forward Observations Pod and Primary Operations Complex are established.
  • October 9, 2229 - death of Kenji Maurita, which prompts Tomiko Maurita to take a summer internship on LV-1201 to investigate his fate.
  • 2230-2231 - The following events all take place within these two years:
    • September 21-23, 2230 - Major Dunya shuts down the Engineer artifact in the ruined Yautja hunting grounds, now called Zeta Site, accidentally awakening the Ancient Predator from stasis. The Predator infiltrates Pod 5 and sends a distress call to Prince's clan shortly before his Chestburster kills him.
    • September 23, 2230 -The Ancient Predator accidentally allows the Xenomorphs into Pod 5, forcing General Rykov to destroy it.
    • November 23-25, 2230 -Five weeks after Pod 5's loss, a shipping mishap causes a single Xenomorph Drone to get loose in the POC and allow the Xenomorphs to infest it. This causes LV-1201 to loose contact with Earth, prompting the United States Colonial Marine Corps to investigate.
    • December 1-10, 2230 - Four weeks later, Prince's clan finally arrives on LV-1201, but Prince and two of his clanmates are captured by Rykov and subjected to experimentation in the Pods. One of Prince's clanmates is used as a host for a Predalien while the other is dissected.
    • January 6, 2231 - A USCMC detachment arrives on LV-1201 aboard the USS Verloc. Their attempts to access the Pods results in the defense grid shutting down, allowing the Xenomorphs to infiltrate the Pods.
    • January 6, 2231 - Dr. Eisenberg puts together an operation to capture the Empress.
    • January 6, 2231 - The same Drone who caused the POC infestation frees the Predalien from its enclosure, before leaving the Pods to rescue the Empress. The Predalien is later killed by USCMC Corporal Andrew Harrison.
    • January 6, 2231 - As part of a plot to kill the marines and hijack the Verloc and flee LV-1201 with the captured Empress, Dr. Eisenberg and General Rykov trick the marines into investigating a Xenomorph-infested research encampment. Corporal Harrison learns of the plot and, with assistance from Tomiko, survives an attempt on his life by the Iron Bears.
    • January 6-7, 2231 - The actions of both Harrison and the Drone frees Prince from his confinement. He recovers his lost gear and escapes from the Pods to pursue Rykov, who has stolen his helmet. He confronts Rykov deep in the Xenomorph Hive, killing him before leaving the planet with his clan.
    • January 7, 2231 - The Drone pursues Dr. Eisenberg to a landing pad where he is attempting to escape with the Empress. The Drone frees the Empress, and the two of them capture Eisenberg and cocoon him in the Hive.
    • January 7, 2231 - Corporal Harrison tracks his squad to an Engineer temple, where he saves them from a Queen and successfully evacuates them to the Verloc. As they escape, Tomiko sacrifices her life by triggering a nuclear explosion that destroys the Pods and the POC. The USCSC ceases all rescue and salvage operations and begins the trek home to Earth, unaware that they are being pursued by Prince and his clan.
    • July 12, 2231 - Dunya and other surviving Iron Bears kidnap Weyland-Yutani scientists (epilogue).
  • The primary Xenomorph Hive on LV-1201 remains intact, having survived the explosion.

Trivia[]

AVP2 Hungarian novel

The cover of Alien vs. Predator: Forced Chase.

  • An unlicensed novel adaptation of the game by Ren Wargner was published in 2012 in Hungary, under the title Idegen vs Ragadozó: Kényszerhajsza ("Alien vs. Predator: Forced Chase"). As an unofficial product, it has not been recognized by either the developers of the game or 20th Century Studios in any way. The book is in fact just one of several unofficial Aliens/Predator/Aliens vs. Predator novels released in Hungary.
  • Aliens versus Predator 2 marks the first appearance of the Runner caste in the AVP series of video games.
  • The Alien3 character Michael Bishop is mentioned in some of the messages found in the Pods.
  • The idea of prisoners being used in experiments with the Xenomorphs, which is touched upon in the game, previously appeared in David Twohy's unproduced script for a third Alien film.
  • For reasons unknown, the 10th episode of the 2nd Season of Dark Angel, titled Brainiac, featured a brief gameplay cameo of AVP2 (both the Aliens vs. Predator franchise and the Dark Angel TV series are owned by 20th Century Fox). It originally aired on Jan. 11, 2002, not long after the game's original release in reality. A few short clips of ingame footage (from the Marine player character's perspective only) are seen in the episode, with the game itself serving as a minor plot element. A few unrealistic aspects can be seen here. First, AVP2 was never released as an arcade title, and as such never had an arcade cabinet, as it would be exceedingly difficult to play a fast-paced FPS game with only a joystick and the three side buttons depicted in the episode. Next, the cameo gameplay switches between AVP2's levels and multiplayer/singleplayer modes in the space of a few seconds, something that isn't possible in the actual game. Finally, the series is set in 2019, and AVP2 was released in 2001, which would make it a decidedly "retro" title by that time (and the unnamed arcade it's depicted in isn't specifically labelled a "retro" arcade either). On a side note, the director of Dark Angel, James Cameron, also directed Aliens (which would form half of the basis for the AVP franchise). What role he had in the decision to include AVP2's cameo on his show, or what he thought of such a decision, is unknown.[2]
