Evolution of the Species: Predators Reborn is a 2010 documentary directed by Javier Soto that details the production of the 2010 film Predators. It was created exclusively for the Predators Blu-ray, although a single chapter is also included on the film's DVD release. The documentary uses interviews with the film's cast and crew, as well as behind the scenes footage and imagery, to examine the development and filming of the movie.
Overview[]
The documentary is divided into six separate chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of Predators' production. It features no formal narration but instead relies on newly-filmed interview clips to tell the story of the film's development, interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage and images.
Bloodline[]
The first chapter is primarily focussed on the original Predator movie, including its impact and legacy and how this influenced the third film. The documentary also briefly looks at Robert Rodriguez's uproduced script from 1996 that loosely inspired aspects of Predators.
Includes interviews with director Nimród Antal and producers Elizabeth Avellán, John Davis and Robert Rodriguez.
Decloaking the Invisible: Alien Terrain[]
The second chapter covers the location filming carried out in Hawaii and Texas, as well as the work of the stuntmen who helped bring the film's practical stunt sequences to life. Also touched upon are the props and some of the sets created for the movie.
Includes interviews with Nimród Antal, Elizabeth Avellán, Robert Rodriguez, actors Topher Grace and Walton Goggins, production designers Caylah Eddleblute and Steve Joyner, location manager Logan Cooper, and stunt coordinator Jeff Dashnaw.
Intelligent Design: The Hunting Camp[]
The third chapter goes into much greater detail about the film's sets, in particular the central Super Predator hunting camp set.
Includes interviews with Nimród Antal, Elizabeth Avellán, Robert Rodriguez, Caylah Eddleblute and Steve Joyner.
Predators as Prey[]
The fourth chapter examines the film's human cast, including the production's desire to cast actors not necessarily known for action movie roles.
Includes interviews with Nimród Antal, Robert Rodriguez, and actors Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne and Danny Trejo.
Yautja Transformed[]
The fifth and longest chapter looks at the creatures featured in the movie, including the redesign of the titular Predators and the effects work needed to bring the various aliens to the screen.
Includes interviews with Nimród Antal, Elizabeth Avellán, Robert Rodriguez, visual effects coordinator Emily davis, puppeteer Greg Nicotero.
Rite of Passage[]
The final chapter covers how Nimród Antal got the job of directing Predators, before looking at the stress of filming the movie, and how this was compounded by the fact the crew were creating a new entry in such a well-known franchise.
Includes interviews with Nimród Antal and Robert Rodriguez.
