Carlo Rambaldi (September 15, 1925 – August 10, 2012) was an Academy Award-winning Italian special effects artist who served as part of the creature effects crew on the 1979 film Alien. Specifically, he constructed the animatronic "hero" Alien head for Alien, working from H. R. Giger's original designs and incorporating the necessary mechanical elements to allow the head to perform on camera. Other notable films Rambaldi has worked on include King Kong (1976), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
For his work on Alien, Rambaldi won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects (shared with H. R. Giger, Brian Johnson, Nick Allder and Dennis Ayling). In addition to this, he has won a further two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects for the 1976 remake of King Kong and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) and a Saturn Award.
