Bendez was a member of the United States Colonial Marine Corps. During a mission to investigate the colony ship Shiname Maru, the unit tasked with doing so was attacked by a biomechanical creature that set about consuming the ship. Bendez and several other Marines were able to jettison the vessel's cargo module and escape the lifeform.
