- "Hey, I sure wouldn't mind getting some more of that Arcturian poontang, remember that time?"
"Yeah, Frost, but the one that you had was male."
"It doesn't matter when it's Arcturian, baby." - ―Pvt. Frost and Pvt. Spunkmeyer (from Aliens)
The Arcturians were a humanoid extraterrestrial species native to the planet Arcturus.[1] They were the first sentient alien species encountered by mankind[2] and humanity had established interspecies trade with them by the late 2100s.[3] They were often confused with the Arctura, a separate species present on Arcturus.[4]
Characteristics[]
Speculated to be predecessors to humans,[5] Arcturians are almost visibly identical to the former, though there are some slight cosmetic differences between the species: Arcturians have pale, almost translucent skin, small noses, dark hair and large eyes. They are described to be of "stunning grace and beauty", and also use charcoal and phosphorus chalks to draw patterns on their skin.[6]
For clothing, they use stitched fabrics and animal hides,[7] and are less technologically adept than humans - they have been likened to that of Mesoamericans.[8] However, they have been known to embrace culture from outside of their planet, with some Arcturians not only learning English and Chinese, but also equipping themselves with human firearms and even taking up jobs at the Weyland-Yutani farm and trading post, stationed on Arcturus.[9] Despite their openness, they are not an interplanetary people, and refuse to leave their home planet.[10]
Arcturians believed that they were visited numerous times by an ancient alien race known as the 'Star Teachers', and that one day they will return to Arcturus once again.[11] Analysis of ancient 'Star Teacher' artefacts, revealed that they are incredibly similar to Engineer origin,[12] insinuating that they are likely one and the same.
Though they are mostly a peaceful race, they are capable of warfare; Arcturians are mostly artisan, but do possess a 'Guardian' caste, traditionally equipped with fiber-armor, bone-knives and atlatls.[13]
Arcturians live in tribes called 'warrens'. Their architecture is similar to that of the ancient Mayan and Pueblo people.[14] They are a highly cultured race, and engage in art, fungiculture, complex mathematics and linguistics and theoretical quantum physics.[15] As a result, close contact and trade with the Arcturians have since allowed Weyland-Yutani to develop medicinal technologies based on their fungiculture.[16]
Arcturians are also the source of Arcturian Klerhaige, a disease that is communicable to human beings.[17]
During the USS Sulaco's mission to Acheron, Private Ricco Frost mentioned sleeping with Arcturians on a previous operation. Private Daniel Spunkmeyer subsequently pointed out that the one Frost had was male, to which Frost responded, "Doesn't matter when it's Arcturian, baby!" It therefore seems likely that Arcturians have very little differentiation between sexes; in actuality, Arcturians are gender fluid and can adapt to differing role during communal shifts.[18]
Aliens Adventure Game (Non-canon)[]
Arcturians are roughly humanoid, bipedal in form and comparable in size to humans. However, they are comparatively lacking in mental capacity; their intelligence has been likened to that of lower apes.[19] Biologically, they exhibit an unusual combination of insect and mammalian traits — physiologically, they are mammal-like, yet they live in subterranean colonies that reproduce via a single fertile, egg-laying queen. Like humans, they are warm-blooded, omnivorous and breathe oxygen, yet they are eyeless and communicate and rationalize their surroundings through a form of natural sonar.[19]
The species' reproductive cycle is particularly curious. After hatching from their egg, their young are amphibious and are raised in warm pools in a communal nursery at the bottom of the hive.[20] Despite their curious biology, Arcturians are sexually compatible (at least in a recreational sense) with humans.[21] Although not typically aggressive, colony members are fiercely defensive of their queen.[20]
Behind the scenes[]
In reality, Arcturus is the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. With a visual magnitude of −0.04, it is the fourth brightest star in the night sky, after −1.46 magnitude Sirius, −0.86 magnitude Canopus, and −0.27 magnitude Alpha Centauri. It is a relatively close star at only 36.7 light-years from Earth, and, together with Vega and Sirius, one of the most luminous stars in the Sun's neighborhood.
Trivia[]
- Some researchers have speculated a link between the Arcturians and Engineer species, though no official paper has been published on the topic.[22]
- Aspects of the original description of the Arcturians from the Aliens Adventure Game have since been used for the Arctura species.
