Andy is a synthetic and 'brother' of Rain Carradine.

Biography[]

Early Service[]

Andy originated on Jackson's Star located in LV-410;[3] a society that, unfortunately for him, disliked synthetics.[4] He had a habit of telling pun-based jokes to Rain, and in her early years, she found them humorous.[5]

When Rain's father was dying, he left Andy to be a kind of caretaker for his daughter. However, Andy was damaged and was an older model, so rather than becoming Rain's surrogate father, he became a 'younger brother' to her with the two shared a close bond.[6] Due to his damaged state, Andy was more of a burden than a help to Rain, but the two remained close.[5]

When Rain found out Yvaga III did not grant synthetics residency as it was unaffiliated with Weyland-Yutani Corporation, Rain was hesitant to inform him of this fact and chose to hid it from him.

Renaissance Station[]

In 2142,[7] while inquiring about a permit to leave for Yvaga, Andy was attacked by a group of delinquent kids, but Carradine quickly intervened and repaired him. Moments later, they are summoned by Carradine's ex-boyfriend, Tyler Harrison who told her to bring Andy for their secret mission. At his residence, Harrison informed Carradine of a derelict space station drifting in orbit above the colony, telling her they could use the station's still-functioning hypersleep chambers to facilitate an escape to Yvaga. Although initially reluctant to trespass on Weyland-Yutani property and put Andy in danger, she eventually agreed, especially since Andy was essential for communicating with the station's computers.

The group left in the mining hauler Corbelan IV to the derelict craft in which it was the first time either she or Andy had left their world's atmosphere.[3] During their trip, Bjorn continuously harassed Andy due to his synthetic roots as his mother and two other miners were killed by one in trying to save more than a dozen miners. Andy is frequently protected by Carradine and Harrison from Bjorn's abusive antics. Harrison, Andy and Bjorn board the station and fix the unstable gravity and atmosphere generators. However, they discovered the hypersleep chambers don't have enough fuel for the nine-year trip to Yvaga. During their search, Bjorn revealed the fact that Carradine had been trying to hid him from, Andy was content with staying in the mining colony while helping them reach Yvaga in order to complete Rain's father directive to which Harrison was thankful.

The trio located a large, still-functioning cryonic chamber next to a laboratory and scavenge its fuel. In doing so, they inadvertently revived the frozen Facehugger specimens inside and triggered an automatic lockdown. The Facehuggers attacked them, and Andy didn't have the security clearance needed to override the lockdown, prompting Navarro and Carradine to come to their rescue. Carradine removed a chip from a destroyed synthetic and handed to Harrison who inserted in Andy. He temporarily rebooted with the new chip in his module which granted him full access and knowledge of Renaissance while repairing his malfunctions, but it also reseted his primary directive to serve Weyland-Yutani. Soon, the crew is pursued by a horde of Facehuggers with one attached itself to Navarro. Following unsuccessful attempts to release her from its grip, Carradine reactivated the destroyed synthetic, Rook, to ask for help. Rook stated that Navarro cannot be saved. However, Carradine proposed that they freeze the Facehugger’s tail to get it off Navarro. The idea worked, allowing the group to removed the creature from her face. Rook still warned that Navarro may have been implanted by the creature. From then on, Rook began to subtly influence Andy, pushing him to prioritize Weyland-Yutani's mission.

Andy tried to stop Navarro from returning to the Corbelan IV, but Bjorn, who thought that he was going to kill her, shocked Andy and flee with Navarro aboard the vessel, leaving the others behind. Carradine rebooted Andy who proceeded to pursue them but failed. Soon, Navarro and Bjorn were killed by the newly-born Xenomorph with the unstable Corbelan IV crashed into the Romulus hangar bay in which they witnessed through the station's camera feed. The impact destabilized Renaissance, which now had less than an hour before crashing into the rings of LV-410. On their way to hanger, they were almost subdued by a horde of Facehuggers with Andy started to show his callousness towards their life. Upon arriving, they encountered Kay who begged to be let in, was refused by Andy who noticed a Xenomorph stalking her. Despite Harrison's begging and Carradine's protests and pleas, Andy refused to open which led to the Xenomorph grabbed Kay and pulled her out of their sight. Thinking Kay was killed, Carradine slapped Andy out of anger but quickly felt remorseful and learned of his new primary directive.

Now focused on his new directives, Andy brings Carradine and Harrison into the lab where he recovered samples of experimental fluid extracted from the Xenomorphs, codenamed "Z-01". The former insisted the samples must be returned to Jackson's Star, taken control of Renaissance's computers and refused to let the Corbelan IV leave without the samples onboard. Before leaving, Carradine noticed that Xenomorph was hunting for them, so Andy had them armed with F44AA Pulse Rifles to fight their way back to the ship. Entering a corridor turned to a Xenomorph hive, Harrison heard Kay crying, leading to the trio finding her severely injured in a cocoon. After she is freed, Andy noticed Kay's injuries and suggested that injecting her with Z-01 could possibly heal her. However, Carradine stopped Harrison from following through the idea and proposed to get her into cryostasis and back to the colony for treatment. The Xenomorphs attack, damaging Andy who tried to save Harrison from the creatures but failed. After rushing Kay to an elevator, Carradine decided to rescue Andy. Initially, he was hesitant in letting Carradine removed his module but she is able to convinced him to let her do so. Carradine removed the extra chip and resets him back to his original directive. They rushed back only to be told by Rook that their escape could potentially compromise the compound and willingly let them die.

When they seem to give up hope, Carradine got an idea to shut off the gravity from one of Andy's frequent jokes as a whole group of Xenomorphs started to come near them. Andy stabilised her in order to take out incoming hostiles. As they rise in the elevator shaft, Andy rescued Carradine from the clutches of Xenomorphs and arrived back at the hangar, just as the Remus started to come down onto the asteroid belt. On board, Rook congratulated their survival and made one final attempt to get Andy to follow the Wey-Yu objective, but they ignore him as Renaissance crashed into the rings and is destroyed, Rook and the Xenomorphs along with it.

Aboard Corbelan IV, Carradine decided to have Andy join their journey to Yvaga instead of following through with his original plan. Before entering stasis, Carradine gave him a new directive: to do what was best for both of them. As she and Andy prepare their departure, Carradine put Kay to a cryo pod but soon after, a warning indicated that she is in critical condition. In the meantime Carradine was attempting to dispose of the egg, Andy found Kay to be injured and encountered the rapidly growing human-Xenomorph hybrid. Andy tried to protect Kay from the creature only to get slashed on the neck by its talons, heavily damaging him. Soon, the mutant killed Kay and destabilized the ship. Carradine is able to eject the creature along with the ship's cargo pod which collided with LV-410's astroid belt. After Carradine regained control, she put Andy in one of the cryopods and promised to fix him.

Behind the Scenes[]

Andy and his sibling relationship with Rain was inspired by Aliens.[8] Based on comments from Fede Álvarez, it has been indicated that Andy is a subversion of the 'evil android' trope, represented in characters such as Ash and David.[6]
