Alien: Earth[1] is an upcoming television series created by Noah Hawley for FX Networks, based on the Alien film series. It was announced on 10th December 2020, with Noah Hawley serving as creator and executive producer, and Ridley Scott in talks to serve as co-executive producer.[2] It is set for release on August 12, 2025.[3]
Publisher's summary[]
When a mysterious vessel crash–lands on Earth, a young woman and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face–to–face with the planet's greatest threat.
Plot[]
The series will be set on Earth in 2120,[4] two years before the events of Alien. It has been described as being a loose prequel to Alien.[5] The plot deals with the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and its competitors, all of whom have their own plans for synthetic humans.[6] It has been indicated that the series deals with the origins of the Company, which in current canon, was formed in 2099.[7]
It is stated to blend the horror elements of the original film with the action elements of its sequel.[8] This will include the aesthetics of both films, which Hawley has described as retrofuturism. For instance, no holograms will feature.[9]
Earth will not incorporate elements from Prometheus or Alien: Covenant. This includes the titular alien itself, with the show's take representing the idea that the xenomorph is the product of millions of years of evolution, rather than "a bioweapon created half an hour ago." It has been indicated that artificial intelligence will still play a role in the series however, including the idea of humanity being "trapped between a "primordial parasitic past" and "its AI future."[9]
It is intended that the series will have multiple seasons.[10] Only a single Xenomorph will be present.[11]

Production and Development[]
An Alien television series was first proposed as early as 1980. 20th Century Fox attempted to sell the idea to ABC, but ultimately no series ever came to fruition. In 2018, rumors began circulating that a television series based on the Alien franchise had entered the early stages of development, still seeking a broadcast network.[14] In 2019, Deadline reported that Noah Hawley had unsuccessfully attempted to produce an Alien miniseries for FX, meeting with opposition from Fox ex-Vice Chairman Emma Watts.[15] In an interview with Observer in September 2020, Hawley acknowledged the unsuccessful pitch, commenting on the potential to more deeply explore character drama in the television series format.[16] On 10th December 2020, FX Chairman John Landgraf officially announced the Alien TV series during the Disney Investor Day 2020 live stream, with Hawley attached as Executive Producer.[8]
Hawley went into the series with a structure of how it would begin and end.[10]
The series's lone Xenomorph's design was partly the result of Hawley. While the silhouette of the creature is consistent with prior appearances, Hawley brought some of his own thoughts to the design.[17]
On August 2, 2022, FX announced that the series would officially start filming in 2023.[18]
The series was filmed in Bangkok.[19] Production was delayed in August 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Production resumed in 2024.[10] Production completed in July 2024, after which work began on the first season's visual effects.[20]
In August 2024, a teaser for Earth was shown in select screenings of Alien: Romulus. The teaser showed the Earth reflected in the head of a Xenomorph, followed by a promised release date of 2025.[21] A few seconds of footage were released to the public in November 2024.[22] In March 2025, a new teaser was released, showing a Xenomorph attacking the crew of a vessel.[23]
